CHEM 1320 1st Edition Lecture 3Outline of Last Lecture I. Nucleus and ElectronsOutline of Current Lecture I. Periodic TableII. Ions III. Molecules IV. Ionic CompoundsV. Molecular CompoundsVI. ElementsCurrent LectureI. Periodic TableGroup one (the column all the way to the left of the periodic table) is the alkali metals. Group 2 (to the right of group one) is called the alkaline earth metals. Group eighteen (all the way to the right on the periodic table) is called the noble gasses. Lastly, group seventeen (the column to the right of the noble gasses) is called the halogens. The metals in the middle of the periodic table are called transition metals, made up of metals and nonmetals. On the right side of the transition metals (which looks like under the stairs) is the metalloids. The atoms of the elementson the periodic table combine in distinct ways in that they combine in whole number ratios. II. IonsCations are positive which means they lose electrons. Anions are negative, so they gain electrons. III. MoleculesWe represent compounds using models to explain how electrons are shared. We can relate electron behavior to chemical behavior. IV. Ionic CompoundsThese are metals and nonmetals that combine cations and anions to make neutral species. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.V. Molecular compoundsThese are combinations of nonmetals. We cannot predict them based on charge neutralization.VI. ElementsSome elements occur in nature as discrete
