Instructor Mr. Heaps Course History 104 Section 15704 Location Main Campus Room CL11 Date: T-Th 5:45-7:00 PM August 25-December 15, 2009 Work number 623-825-3019 Fax number 623-825-3026 E-mail [email protected] Textbook: Vol. 2 “Liberty and Justice for all” by James Davidson and others Attendance Policy As per college and departmental policy, the instructor is allowed to withdraw a student when that student’s absences exceed the number of times the class meets weekly. See current GCC student handbook for complete absence policy Grading procedure There will be six tests this semester. Tests and test questions may vary to include short answer, multiple choice, true-false, matching column, identification/definition, and essay. Test items will include both textbook and lecture material. Take home tests are due within one week after being given. If not turned in on that date, 20% will be subtracted from the test score. After one week, no credit will be given for that test. See student handbook for current policy on cheating or plagiarism. Grading 90-100=A 89- 80=B 70- 79=C 60- 69=D The points on the test vary from 60-106 depending on the unit we have covered There will also be extra credit available this semester. Classroom Etiquette Please turn off pagers and cell phones and any other electronic device and keep from view No food or drink in the classroom No children/visitors in classroom Please do not leave classroom while in session unless emergency. The paper is to be word processed or typed 2. Minimum of 2 pages 3. Minimum of 2 sources, may include the internet, no sources-no credit 4. Worth up to 20 points depending on the quality of the report 5. Only two extra credit reports Paper: You may select any topic from the American West through President Clinton. Select a topic that you know little about or one that has interested you for some time and have not had time to pursue it.If the topic warrants an evaluation, please do so by this example: Did the United States make the correct decision concerning the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962? September 15-17 Continue above unit: Immigration and Labor, Assignment, Chapter 19-20 September 22-24 Protest Groups, Politics and Government, Assignment, Chapter 21 Assignment test on Chapters 18-21 and material covered in class September 29-October 1 Progressive Period, Chapter 22 October 6-8 Imperialism, Chapter 21, Test next week on Chapters 21&22 and the material covered in class October 13-15 WWI will basically be covered with the movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Eric Remarque. This test will be 6 essay questions, usually 2-3 typewritten pages worth 60 points, Assignment Chapter 23 October 20-22 The 1920’s, Assignment Chapter 24 October 27-29 Test on WWI, begin 1930’s. Assignment Chapter 25 November 3-5 Begin WWII, Assignment Chapter 26, video “Hitler: Fatal Attraction”, start slide presentation on WWII, test chapters 24,25 November 10-12 Continue WWII, selections from Patton and D-DayNovember 17-19 Conclude WWII, start the Cold War Assignment Chapter 27, Truman, Eisenhower. Test on WWII November 24 Kennedy, Johnson, begin Vietnam, Chapters 28-30 December 1-3 Continue slides on Vietnam. Video: Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam December 8-10 Conclude video on Vietnam December 15 Final Exam includes Truman through Viet
