Prerequisites: None (F, S, D, E, Su1, Su2) Required Textbook: “U. S. A Narrative History” (First Edition), James West Davidson, Brian DeLay, Christine Leigh Heyrman, Mark H. Lytle, Michael B. Stoffl. ISBN-13: 978-0-07-731339-5; Chapters 17 - 32 are included in this course. Course Competencies: History concerns the political, economic, social, and cultural events and achievements of humanity. Historians analyze and evaluate this material in an attempt to understand the past and interpret the present. Students will possess an understanding of the present that is informed by an awareness of past heritages in human history, arts, philosophy, religion, and literature, including the complex and independent relationships among cultures. Students will be able to analyze and critically interpret significant primary texts and/or works of art (this includes fine art, literature, music, theatre, & film). Students will be able to compare art forms, modes of thought and expression, and processes across a range of historical periods and/or structures (such as political, geographic, economic, social, cultural, religious, intellectual). Students will recognize and articulate the diversity of human experience across a range of historical periods and/or cultural perspectives. Students will draw on historical and/or cultural perspectives to evaluate any or all of the following: contemporary problems/issues, contemporary modes of expression, and contemporary thought. Course Outline (schedule of class dates, topics, assignments): See separate sheet entitled “Schedule and Assignments”Expectations of Students: It is important for students to recognize that the completion of all quizzes, exams, and assignments, by the stated deadlines, is important. Regular progress is to be maintained. Questions or concerns regarding the timely completion of any assignment should be directed to the instructor via E-mail at [email protected] or at [email protected] or a telephone call 602-788-2154 (Home & Fax). Please allow sufficient time for a reply to be formulated. The material in this course (readings, quizzes, exams, research papers) is challenging and requires the student to participate in a timely manner. If all assignments are to be completed, there will not be time for extra credit assignments. Attendance: There are 30 class periods associated with this 16-week course and students are expected to be in attendance at each and every one, unless excused by the instructor. The college attendance policy is set forth in the Glendale Community College, General Catalog & Student Handbook, 2010-2011, Pages 36 - 37, Attendance (AR 2.3.2). Excused absences are determined by the instructor. Reasons for excused absences must be substantiated and the instructor notified in advance, if possible. Each instance of two (2) unexcused absences will result in a reduction of one letter grade at the time Final Grades are submitted. Research Paper: Each student will write one research paper for this course. The Research Paper is worth 250 points toward the student’s Final Grade. This paper should meet the following criteria: Typewritten, double-spaced and be no less than seven pages in length, including the title page and bibliography. A total of four sources must be used, two of which must be non-textbook and non-internet. Left, right, bottom and top margins of no more than 1 ½ inches will be maintained. A font size of no greater than 14 will be used. Research Paper topics will be chosen by the student and can be a person, event or activity covered by the chapters (17 - 32) used in the textbook for this course. Each student must discuss the research paper idea with the instructor and select a topic by September 16, 2010 prior to beginning work. Students not choosing a topic for their Research Paper, by the deadline, will be penalized 25 points, to be deducted from the final grade of the paper. The due date of the Research Paper will be December 9, 2010. Grading Scale: As per GCC School Catalog (2009 – 2010), Page 37 Grade Grade Scale A – Excellent 90 -100% B – Above Average 80 – 89% C – Average 70 – 79% D – Below Average 60 – 69% F – Failing 59% and belowBasis for Student Evaluation: Quizzes 1500 points (15 @ 100 points each) Attendance/Participation 750 points (30 @ 25 points each) Final Examination 250 points ( 1 @ 250 points each) Research Paper 250 points ( 1 @ 250 points) Total 2750 points Taping of Faculty Lectures: Students are permitted to tape lectures provided by the instructor (Audio Tape Only!) as long as the procedure used does not detract from the remainder of the class. Students with disabilities that render them unable to take adequate lecture notes are entitled to reasonable accommodation to remedy this inability. Policy for Late Coursework and Make-up Exams: There will be 15 periodic quizzes pertaining to chapters covered. Make-up quizzes will be given only for students with official or excused absences. Quizzes or assignments that are missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up except in extreme situations.
