Test 2 first letter of last name --> Chemistry 10 – Dr. Kline January 19, 2011 Name_______________________________________This test consists of a combination of multiple choice and other questions. There should be a total of 12 questions on three pages; please check to make sure that they are all here. Do not use your own tables, scratch paper or other information. Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and other communication devices; they will be confiscated if they make noise. No food. No water. No gum. No bathroom breaks. No scratch paper. A regular calculator is OK, but you may not use graphing or programmable calculators and they will be confiscated if they are discovered during the test. The test will end 90 minutes after it starts. The info sheet is on a sheet separate from the rest of the test; please check out the information on said sheet before asking questions about missing information in the body of the test.Multiple Choice QuestionsThese eight questions are worth four points each, for a total of 32 points. Unless it is stated otherwise in a given problem, there is only one correct answer for each question. Answer each question by circling all letter(s) corresponding to the correct choice(s) . If more than one answer is correct, you should circle all of the correct ones. It is not necessary to show work for these questions; however, you may write on the exam. 1. In which of the following is the chemical substance correctly labeled with the basic units of which it exists? More than one may be correct.a. Aluminum chloride - moleculesb. Helium - single atoms c. Ammonium chloride - formula units (ionic compound)d. Phosphorus trichloride - molecules e. None of the above. 2. Which of the following compounds has the highest mass percent composition of oxygen?a. C2H2O2b. C6H4O2c. TiO2 3. What is the mass of one formula unit of lithium phosphide (to within ± 0.2 amu)?a. 37.9 amub. 51.8 amuc. 99.8 amud. 85.9 amue. 44.9 amue. None of the above 4. Which of the following metal samples, each in the shape of a cube and having a volume of 100. mL, contains the most atoms?a. Lead (d = 11.4 g/mL) b. Gold (d = 19.3 g/mL)c. Copper (d = 8.96 g/mL)d. Titanium (d = 4.50 g/mL)5. For which of the following is/are the molecular and the empirical formula the same? More than one answer may be correct.a. Sulfur dioxideb. Sodium peroxidec. Lead (IV) oxided. Ammonium nitratee. None of them Page 1 of 4 – Test 2A– Chem 10 (Winter 2011)6. How many carbon atoms are present in one mole of ethanol, C2H6O? a. Other QuestionsEach of the following questions is worth the indicated number of points, for a total of 68 points. Please be sure to provide all of the information requested for each question. Show work with units for all calculations.9. 30 points Provide the name for each of the following chemical formulas and the chemical formula for each of the names. Spelling counts!FormulaNameBr3S8 Cu2SO3 H2C2O4 (aq)K2O2NO2H2Se (aq)Mercury (I) phosphateStrontium dichromateGold (III) hydroxideTin (II) bicarbonate Page 2 of 4 – Test 2A– Chem 10 (Winter 2011)10. 10 points Balance the following equations. State labels have been deliberately left out for simplification. a. As + Cl2 → AsCl3 b. MgS + HCl → MgCl2 + H2S c. C2H6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O d. CaS + CaSO4 → CaO + SO211. 14 points The price of copper metal, as of Monday, was $4.3517/pound. What is the cost of one atom of copper in pesos? One Mexican peso = $0.0833, also as of Monday. Give your final answer to three significant digits. 12. 14 points The main active psychotropic molecule in Salvia divinorum is called Salinorin A. It has a molecular mass of 432.4 g/mole and its mass percent composition is 63.88% carbon, 6.52% hydrogen, and 29.60% oxygen. Determine its molecular formula. Hint: it contains an even number of oxygen atoms. Please circle or put a box around your final answer (molecular formula). You may use the back of this page.
