STANDARDIZED COURSE DESCRIPTION This course builds upon Practice I by deepening the students’ knowledge of the generalist social work perspective in the application of theory and practice methods for effective and ethical service delivery to diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities in conjunction with field education. II. STANDARDIZED COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically analyze professional values, ethical dilemmas and ethical decision making and their impact on service delivery, policy and practice; 2. Identify, critique, apply and evaluate social work theories and methods from a strengths based generalist perspective for effective service delivery to diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities; 3. Apply beginning practice skills in the development, leadership and evaluation of small groups in agency, organization and community settings; 4. Identify aspects of human diversity within and between groups and the implications for this diversity in assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation; 5. Demonstrate knowledge of leadership and advocacy skills, conflict management and interprofessional collaboration at all levels of social work practice to promote social and economic justice;6. Apply a beginning level of skill in utilizing empirical knowledge to evaluate theoretical frameworks, intervention plans and practice effectiveness; 7. Communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, assessment, intervention and evaluation plans for diverse client systems that enhance client strengths, capacities, assets and resources. III. TEACHING METHODS This class will be taught using a variety of methods with an emphasis on experiential learning via an active learning centered model. Teaching methods might include role-plays and simulations, case examples, student presentations, videos, class discussions, small group interactions, collegial consultation, lectures and guest lectures. The assignments will provide the opportunity for "learning by doing" in role-play, small groups, and individual and group projects. To achieve success in learning in this course, you must be willing to participate, risk yourself, stretch your creativity, and attend class! You are encouraged to ask questions as well as provide the professor with information and feedback. IV. REQUIRED & RECOMMENDED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Required: Corey, M.S. & Corey, G. (Eds.) (2010)). Groups Process and Practice, 8th edition. Thompson Brooks/Cole Coady, N., & Lehmann, P. (Eds.) (2008). Theoretical Perspectives For Direct Social Work Practice. Springer Publishing Company All Required Readings listed on the class schedule, that are not found in the textbooks, will be available via Blackboard and/or e-reserves. If readings are added after the beginning of the class semester, you will be notified by the Professor. Recommended: Roberts, A.R. (Ed.) (2009). Social Worker’s Desk Reference. Oxford: University Press. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Class Participation (5 pts) Students are expected to attend each class, arrive on time, remain awake, stay for the entire class, and to be actively and meaningfully present for effective learning and demonstration of professional behavior. In order to receive the highest level of participation points, healthy risk-taking for professional growth must be demonstrated. Participation points will be determined by attendance, level of interest, respect for others’ learning needs and contributions to classroomdiscussions and activities. Being prepared for class by reading assigned material is part of this professional expectation as well. Absences and tardiness will result in a lowered participation grade. 2. Community Support Group Observation (10 pts) This assignment will provide students an opportunity to increase their knowledge of the therapeutic group process and leadership skills. Students will attend a community support group meeting and write a brief summary of their observations. Instructions for this assignment will be provided. Due: 2/26/09 3. Group Presentation of a Social Work Practice Theory (25 pts) The class will be assigned to four task groups with 3-4 members in each group. The group will work together to prepare a presentation on an assigned Practice Theory. The Group Presentation will give students the opportunity to develop a professional training which provides a thorough overview of the theory. Instructions for this assignment will be provided. Due: See Course Schedule 4. Task Group Analysis Paper (15 pts) Students will write an analysis of their task group experience, applying theories discussed in class and in assigned readings. The analysis will include the student’s evaluation of themselves as a group participant. Instructions for this assignment will be provided. Due: 4/9/09 5. Multidimensional Case Assessment with Theory/Advocacy (25 pts) This assignment will build on assessment skills learned in Practice I. Students will prepare a multidimensional case assessment on a client. This assessment will include the application of a relevant practice theory or theories in the analysis of the case. Students will suggest an evidenced based intervention and will also address the economic and social justice issues present. A plan for client advocacy and empowerment will be included. Instructions for this assignment will be provided. Due: 4/23/09 6. Videotaped Interview and Presentation (20 pts) This assignment will give students an opportunity to further develop interviewing skills learned in Practice I. Each student will videotape an interview with another classmate or friend. A portion of the tape will be presented to the class along with an
