BISC 421 1st Edition Lecture 33 Outline of Current LectureI. Higher Brain Functions part 1Current LectureHigher Brain Functions part 1•In the medial temporal lobe (also where the hippocampus is)•Early indications that the limbic regions were involved in emotional control•Removed medial temporal lobe and found that the monkeys were tame – loss of anger and fear•Also had other symptoms indicated above•Humans also show the same syndrome•But if you lesion just the amygdala you get the same changes showing that it is responsibleDifcult to study afects of amygdala lesions because bilateral and lesion of one half doesn't really have much efect•In order to study have to fnd patients that have bilateral lesions•This one patient just had lesions in bilateral amygdala•Show SM pictures and ask her to identify expression on those pictures•Could accurately detect all emotions except for fear-‐ indicating that the amygdala is responsible for detection of fear. The reason she can't detect it is because she doesn't look at the eyes to detect emotion-‐ the eyes•In one experiment they showed pictures or exposed her to these scary things-‐ SM showed less fear in response to fear producing situations as compared to controls•Also showed her scary movies and again she showed less fear than normal controls•What defnes us as humans•Lesions in posterior parietal cortex – can see things but don't know what they are•Understanding comes from study of stroke patients-‐ damage to one hemisphere•Lesions all on the right side only•Found that they got lost going from one room to the other always making the same mistake•Called left neglect•Drawing a house they only will copy the right side of the picture (contralateral neglect)•They can see what is on the lef, they just ignore it•Lesion in the right hemisphere•Interestingly there is no right neglect syndrome (lesion in the left hemisphere will not cause right neglect)•Known to occur in lesion of right hemisphere•The right hemisphere is doing double duty, it is getng information from the left visual feld and right visual feld but the left hemisphere is only getng information from the right visual feld- ‐this means that if you have a lesion in your right hemisphere then you lose all ability to see in the left visual feld but if lesion is in the left hemisphere then the right hemisphere takes over- why there is no right
