Robbins and DeCenzo Prentice Hall 4th ed 2004 Additional Texts Recommended None Description This course concentrates on the management skills needed by first line supervisors with practical applications taken from common supervisory situations While employees generally receive promotions to supervision based on their technical expertise this course provides management and people skills to add to those technical skills As managers we are continually called to guide and motivate those with whom we work In addition to these duties true managers are also responsible for the welfare of the people with whom they work The aforementioned responsibilities include but are not limited to ensuring that directions given are clear and direct recognizing when to give direction as well as how to give it understanding oneself in an effort to communicate effectively knowing when lines of authority have been compromised appropriately communicating concerns of employees to others in authority defining in oneself the difference between a manager and a leader and effectively utilizing tools for optimization of leadership capabilities By looking at leadership and supervision introspectively one can be better assured of success in the workplace Course Objectives Outcomes Students will gain an understanding of the nature of supervision including the roles supervisors are expected to play the environment in which supervisors work and the competencies they are expected to possess and use Students will be able to display an understanding of the challenges facing American businesses in an increasingly diverse highly technological and increasingly global environment Students will learn the relationships between planning and controlling in organizations including the necessity to establish goals set standards of performance and develop systematic methods to make certain organizational objectives are being accomplished as planned The problem solving and decision making models will be examined and students will learn what tools are available to assist in the models as well as what decision making styles are used including their own Students will consider the ethical consideration of all concepts they learn in this class and they will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of such considerations Students will examine and be expected to fully understand the human resource planning functions of organizing staffing and employee development Employee selection orientation training appraising and compensating will be studied Students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of current management philosophy regarding each of those issues Current theories of individual and group motivation will be studied and students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of each as they apply to the broad ranges of employee and group ability education and experience Students will demonstrate their knowledge of effective leadership styles as they are affected by situations Contemporary leadership issues will be studied and students will be expected to fully understand those issues Students will study the different methods of communication and the barriers to their effectiveness They will demonstrate their understanding of the importance of communication and they will enhance their own abilities by learning different methods of improving communication effectiveness Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the methods used to supervise groups and teams They will learn to differentiate between groups and teams why people join groups why teams are gaining in importance in the U S how effective teams are built and how they are effectively supervised Workplace dynamics will be studied and students will demonstrate their knowledge of how conflict and politics affect the supervisor s job and how to deal with change and stress Disciplinary procedures including both positive and negative characteristics will be studied and students will demonstrate their understanding of the impact their decisions can have on both the individual and the organization The limitations of supervisors in unionized organizations will be studied Students will examine and learn the concepts involved in labor relations 2 Meetings See schedule below Attendance Attendance is very important to your success in this class While tests may be made up lectures and class discussions cannot be replicated Arriving thirty minutes late or leaving thirty minutes before class is dismissed constitutes an absence In the event of an absence it is the student s responsibility to call WBU and the instructor Absences will affect your grade as lectures class exercises guest speakers and other activities cannot be replicated More than six absences will result in a failing grade for the course Grading Criteria In Class Activities Mini Paper Mini Paper Presentation Weekly Written Oral Presentations Class Incomplete Class Participation Class participation is a very important part of education This class requires active class participation Many classes begin with a basic question that appears clear cut and the class participation is what helps add to the complexity that is critical for solving problems and understanding processes Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class Other Important Information 1 Homework is due at the beginning of each class 2 Late homework will result in a lower grade 3 Written work is graded on the basis of content first but also on the quality of grammar and punctuation 4 All written assignments should be 12 point type double spaced and using APA Manuscript Writing Style 3 5 Questions concerning grades received should be resolved within one week after the assignment has been returned 6 Unless noted as a group assignment all work should be original work of the individual student 7 Academic honesty is expected of all students Plagiarism
