after 10 pm please A CATALOG DESCRIPTION Theory and practice of supervision with emphasis on skills and techniques to facilitate maximum productivity in various kinds of organizations B TEXT Supervision Concepts and Practices of Management Eighth Edition Raymond L Hilgert and Edwin C Leonard Jr South Western College Publishing 2001 C COURSE OBJECTIVES The basic objectives of this course are to provide the student with the framework of supervisory concepts the role of supervisors in society and the workplace and the various factors that influence supervisors on a daily basis We will focus special attention on the role of the first level supervisor It is expected that by the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of the decisions facing the supervisor in areas such as business practices morale behavior motivation and the many roles expected of him her Within this framework general learning objectives include the following 1 Understanding the tools of decision making 2 Develop specific guidelines that will enable students to improve their effectiveness in a supervisory role 3 Develop an overview of the supervisor s role in the organization 4 Identify current problems issues and trends faced by supervisors D CLASS PROCEDURE Students will be responsible for reading the assigned text material prior to each class In addition be prepared to orally present a current news article pertaining to human resources supervison These articles must not be more than 7 days old and may be from any credible source including the WSJ local newspaper and internet Class discussions will be related to the chapters and cases may be assigned for each particular week Term Project Each student will present a Supervisory Analysis of either a current or past supervisor from his her own work experience based on criteria from the text The analysis will be typed Minimum 5 pages narrative and will be turned in by Jan 28 Papers will utilize no larger than a 12point font and must comply with APA styleguide including abstract and table of contents Late papers will be penalized 8 points per day E GRADING There will be three exams scheduled during the term Exams will cover material from the class lectures and assigned chapters only Exams will not be cumulative Each exam will consist of a combination of multiple choice true and false and essay questions Grading will be as follows Exams 60 Written Analysis 20 Class participation discussion of chapters case studies etc and regular class attendance 10 Articles 10 Make up tests will be available only for extreme circumstances and then will consist of T F M C and discussion questions Requests for make ups should be made in writing as soon as the severe extenuating circumstance is known F METHODS FOR ASSESSING OUTCOMES COMPETENCIES SKILLS ABILITIES STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE Course emphasis is on the role of the supervisor in an organization and supervisory decisionmaking Special attention will be directed to discussion of the concepts and practices that describe the challenge of supervision Students will examine the skills necessary in recruiting selecting training appraisals counseling leadership and communication Problem solving dealing with conflict and change special groups unions as well as stress and burn out will be discussed Each chapter begins with a list of objectives and ends with a chapter summary Key terms questions for discussion and skills applications are presented to encourage the student to explore the topics for more ideas ATTENDANCE Roll will be taken each class period Four recorded absences will result in failure of the course If a student is late and misses roll call he or she must notify the instructor at break or after class to record attendance Otherwise the student will be counted absent No correction of attendance records will be made at subsequent classes Additionally students who leave class early without notifying the professor may be counted as absent for the entire period H SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS Besides the textbook each student is encouraged to utilize both library and Internet resources for the purpose of gathering related supplementary materials for class discussion A library research assignment is one requirement for students in this course These assignments will enable the student to develop their skills in gathering suitable research and other pertinent data The instructor will present suitable videos each class period which emphasize the main points of the lecture A comprehensive understanding of APA format is While the San Antonio extension of Wayland Baptist University does not have their own library students have access to many different libraries in the local area There are many articles available such as journals books and magazines which can help the students get more information in understanding the art of supervision For a listing of available libraries refer to the blue student handout available at the back of the classroom or in the Wayland office J INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Students are encouraged to use the Internet s search tools to improve information gathering and provide a broader array of up to date sources The World Wide Web is a section of the Internet that offers easy access to text graphics and other multimedia resources K PROVISION FOR HANDICAPPED STUDENTS Any student who because of a disabling condition may require some special arrangement in order to meet course requirements and should contact the instructor on the first day of class to make the necessary
