Chemistry 14BL Spring 2005 Pre lab and Post lab Report Guidelines for Experiment 1 Pipet Calibration General Comments Prelab Assignment Questions The prelab assignment questions are to be written in your lab notebook They are due at the beginning of your lab section Every student is required to submit all prelab assignments Lab Reports Reports are written at three stages of the experiment The introductory material which constitutes part of your preparation for lab is completed before the lab starts You will turn it in at the start of your lab period Data and observations are completed during the lab section and turned in at the end of each lab period The final sections data analysis error analysis conclusions applications etc are completed after the lab period and are generally due one week after the experiment is complete All work is to be written in your lab notebook Every page must include the experiment title the date and your name and partners if appropriate Unless otherwise noted individual reports are required for an experiment If a group report is allowed the report must include the names of the participants and the contribution that each person makes to the lab work and to the written report Pre lab Work I On line Technique Videos Resources For This Experiment Click on the title below to download the video requires Real Player 1 Laboratory Safety this video was shown on the first day of the lab 2 Use of a Pipet If you have trouble downloading the videos go to the following Web site and click on the appropriate title to download the video http oid ucla edu Webcast Chemistry 3 Click here for a simple review of significant figures II Prelab Assignment questions Refer to your lab manual page 36 Read page 18 21 of the lab manual BEFORE you start working on these questions Complete the following questions ONLY You must show all work for FULL credit 2b 2d 2f 3 4b 4d 5 only for the assigned ones in question 4 6c III The Introductory Report material will include The title of the experiment A reference i e complete reference of the experiment including title of the lab manual author edition and page number of the experiment in the manual etc Include any changes to the procedure that you know you will make Note This quarter you will not calibrate the displacement pipet A short introduction Summarize in two or three sentences the goals of the experiment Outline the techniques that you will use in the experiment A brief flow chart summary of the key procedures of the experiment A data table to record the weights of the bottles before and after the water is transferred to them Note Start a NEW page in your notebook for this section The previous material will be turned in at the beginning of the period this page will be turned in at the end of the lab period Note MSDS information is NOT required for this experiment In class Work IV Data Leave a copy of your data with your TA before you leave the lab Post lab Work due at the beginning of your third lab period V The post lab report for the Volumetric Pipet Calibration will include Calculations Calculate the true weights delivered for the 10 mL pipet follow the example on page 35 Calculate of the volume delivered follow example on page 35 Error Analysis Calculate of the relative average deviation RAD for the volume delivered by the pipet see example on page 20 21 Conclusions Summarize your results and comment on the RAD of the pipet volumes Practical Consideration Identify three actions that you can take to reduce your risk of a harmful accident in the chemistry laboratory
