CHEM14BL FalHistory of AspirinCHEM14BL FalCHEM14BL Fall 2006 Report Guidelines for Week 1 of the Aspirin Experiment (Experiment 4a) Pre-lab report MUST be written inside your lab notebook (I) On-line Resources and Technique Videos For This Experiment Click on the title below to download the video (require Real Player) (1) Laboratory Safety (this video was shown on the first day of the lab) (2) Recrystallization If you have trouble downloading the videos, go to the following Web site and click on the appropriate title to download the video. http://oid.ucla.edu/Webcast/Chemistry/ History of Aspirin Guides for Writing Lab Reports (II) Pre-lab Report Guideline (Week 1 ONLY) IMPORTANT: Make sure that you follow the proper laboratory safety protocol (refer to the course syllabus) BEFORE going to the lab. A laboratory safety check will be conducted at the beginning of the lab. You will be dismissed from the laboratory if you do not have the proper safety protocol. Please also make sure that you show up to the lab on time. Any pre-lab reports that are NOT turned in within the first ten minutes of the lab section will not be accepted for grading. (i) Title of the experiment (ii) Reference of procedures (iii) Introduction (iv) Procedures for week 1 ONLY in flowchart format (v) MSDS information The following chemicals will require you to use the MSDS database on the Web (refer to the MSDS handout): Salicylic Acid (Reagent Grade) Sulfuric acid (Concentrated) Acetic anhydride (Reagent Grade) Note: In MSDS, select the site that gives you the MSDS information closest to the concentration or grade listed above for each individual chemical. You should record the following MSDS information in your notebook for the chemicals listed above. Printouts directly from Web pages will NOT be accepted for grading. Important: Reference the site (i.e. write down the URL address) that you used for each of the chemical. (a) Product Name (b) Chemical Formula (c) Formula Weight (d) Melting Point; Boiling Point and Density (e) Health Hazard Data (summarize in your own words)(f) Spill and Disposal procedures (summarize in your own words)CHEM14BL Fall 2006 Report Guidelines for Week 1 of the Aspirin Experiment (Experiment 4a) Pre-lab report MUST be written inside your lab notebook (II) Pre-lab Report Guideline (Week 1 ONLY) IMPORTANT: Make sure that you follow the proper laboratory safety protocol (refer to the course syllabus) BEFORE going to the lab. (vi) Pre-lab study questions (Must show all work for FULL credit) Complete ALL study problems under week 1. (vii) Data/observations (Start a NEW page) Set up tables but leave blank. You MUST record all the observations into your lab notebook during your lab sessions. You will NOT receive any credit for your lab technique if you only record the weight of the chemicals for this experiment.CHEM14BL Fall 2006 Post-lab Report Guideline for Aspirin Experiment (Part 1) This is an INDIVIDUAL Report Post-lab report MUST be written inside your lab notebook (A) Data/Synthesis (See the bottom of p.58 in your lab manual) Orderly record of data / observations Data tables should have proper titles/labels (B) Data Analysis (MUST SHOW ALL WORK FOR FULL CREDIT) Theoretical moles of Aspirin (MUST identify which one is the limiting reagent) % Crude Yield % Corrected Crude Yield (refer to the lab manual for equation) (C) Conclusions Summarize results Compare % crude yield and % corrected crude yield. Explain why they are different or slightly different. What can you conclude about the % crude yield (especially if your % crude yield is greater than 100% or less than
