Winter 2005 Chemistry 14BL, Lecture 2 (Dr. A. Russell) Important Information on Practice and Final On-Line Exams (I) Practice On-line Exam (“Pre-Exam”) – March 3 to March 8 Hardware and Software Requirements: PC with Internet Explorer and Real Player software. If you don’t already have Real Player installed on the computer, go to www.real.com for a free download. The practice exam serves TWO purposes: (a) It familiarizes you with the on-line exam interface and the style of the exam. (b) It makes sure that you can log on to the exam server AND complete the practice exam without any technical problems BEFORE the actual exam. Go to the following link to take the practice on-line exam: http://www.nslc.ucla.edu/ On the left menu bar, click on “SLC WebCT” (NOT “MASTERING CHEMISTRY”) and then select “Log in to my WebCT”. WebCT login ID is your user name in the email address that is listed with the Registrar’s Office. For example, if your listed email address with the Registrar’s Office is [email protected] or [email protected], your WebCT login ID is jbruin. The WebCT login ID must be typed in ALL LOWER CASE. Your password is your student ID (MUST BE IN 9-DIGIT FORMAT WITHOUT DASHES). Note: If you don’t know or not sure what email address is listed under your name in the Registrar’s Office, logon to URSA online and then click on “Address Information”. You may access the on-line practice exam starting at NOON on March 3 (Thursday) until NOON on March 8 (Tuesday). The practice exam should not take you more than 30 minutes to finish. You will NOT be able to access the practice exam after 12pm on March 8. You may complete the practice exam either at home or on campus. You can also use the computers in Young Hall (1054, 4335 & 4336 Young Hall) to complete the practice exam. Login name for the computers in Young Hall is the same as your BOL user name. Your password is your student ID. IMPORTANT: If you have trouble logging on to the exam server (make sure that you follow the log on instructions exactly as described earlier on this handout), send an email to [email protected] (NOT your TA) immediately. In your email, please also include your name and ID#. If you skip the practice on-line exam and later find out that you cannot log on to the exam server or open up the actual exam, you will NOT be allowed to take the final. It is your responsibility to make sure that you can log on to the exam server AND complete the practice exam by noon on March 8.Once you logon to WebCT, keep in mind the following: (i) Click on the icon title “Chemistry 14BL Practice Exam” (your lab section will appear also in the title) to start the exam. Make sure that you select the correct lab section. (ii) There are a total of 10 questions on the practice exam. (iii) Be sure to click the “SAVE ANSWER” button after you complete each question. (iv) Only click on the “FINISH” button to submit the practice exam for grading when you have completed ALL the questions. Once you click on the “FINISH” button, you will not be able to get back to the practice exam. Each practice exam can only be submitted once. (v) After you submit the exam, make sure you select the “View Results” feature on WebCT to have the practice exam graded and get the score of your exam. If you forget this step, your practice exam will NOT be graded. NOTE: The score that you receive on the practice exam will NOT affect your grade associated with the pre-exam. It is simply a way to make sure that ALL of you are able to log on to the WebCT server and be comfortable with the exam interface BEFORE the actual exam. (II) The Actual On-line Final Exam – March 10 to March 16 The actual exam will cover ALL experiment and all the concepts discussed in lectures . Note: The difficulty and the content of the practice on-line exam does not necessary reflect that of an actual exam. See below on how to prepare for the actual exam. Be sure to review the topics on acid-base equilibrium and buffers from your Chemistry 14B textbook. (i) You MUST take the on-line exam with the teaching assistant during the lab section in which you are officially enrolled. NO EXCEPTION. (ii) The actual on-line exam is CLOSED BOOK AND NOTES. You may use a calculator during the exam. (iii) Scratch paper will be provided during the exam. (iv) Some useful mathematical equations (including absolute uncertainties of various pieces of equipment) will also be provided to you during the exam. (v) You will have 60 minutes to complete the on-line exam. The exam will have 15-20 questions. (vi) To prepare for the exam, you should focus on understanding the concepts presented in the lecture guides, understanding the experimental procedures, watching the technique videos (refer to your lab schedule for videos assignment and VOH report guidelines), reviewing the pre-lab and post-lab reports and review any related topics from your Chemistry 14B textbook. NO MAKE UP EXAM WILL BE
