POLS 207 1st Edition Lecture 2 Outline of Current Lecture Texas compared to U S Current Lecture Texas compared to U S Texas was a country before it became part of the US Most Texans have a stronger loyalty to texas than US Very hospitable compared to north other states More rural space empty space in texas then urban congested land Completely different mind set in open spaces More rebellious towards regulations because more space means more freedom and less rules We need regulations to stop selfish people o Most often used regulation is a sound regulation Population of texas is growing at 20 for the past 10 years Newcomers are going to dilute the culture of texas Texas used to be the biggest oil producer in the world Many Texans end up working for non native Texans because they come from other parts of US with a degree for a job Edu is related to income Income is related to wealth edu is related to life expectancy edu is related to infant mortality edu of women Edu can be broken into 4 groups o Edu of white o Edu of black o Edu of Hispanic o Edu of other Ethnic groups have lower achievements as a whole because the have lower edu as a whole Equal opportunity has affected women most out of everything Women want equal pay as well as equal respect Asian Americans have highest education but lower per capita income because of society limitations but have a higher per home income bc culture Asians live in multi generational home all live together as a family creating multiple incomes and causing a higher household income Texas ranks 49 2000 and 50 in 2006 2010 in the nation in the percentage of resident s covered by health insurance Children born to parents without health insurance have a higher mortality rate Texas was number 6 in 2004 for crime rate Texas has one of the lowest graduation from high school rates Zipcode is used to decide if a child will be successful If you grow up in a rich neighborhood more likely to be successful in life If parents care about education they will motivate and push children to go to college Government o 50 state gov o 1 federal gov o 90 000 local gov Texas 2002 o 254 counties o 1 196 cites o 1090 school districts o 2245 special districts National vs State vs Local o local lowest level o national supreme law of the land supremacy clause o national laws trump local laws US congress vs US Supreme court o Brown vs board of edu o No more segragtion o Pres isenhower had to send troops to differnet states because white oarents didn t want black students Local laws cant take away freedom of citizens o Supremacty clause o ex interracial marriage
