AbstractNew teachers face a myriad of challenges in the first few years of teaching, none more important than the task of classroom management. This is no different for a first year physics teacher. A challenge for all teachers is to make a classroom full of meaningful, purposeful learning moments, this can be magnified for a beginning teacher while trying to establish a respectful learning community. Many first year teachers plan lessons wherethe objectives are more centered towards student behaviors, and completion of tasks, thanfocusing on learning experiences that will enrich their students. In this manuscript I discuss how beginning physics teachers can utilize classroom management to expand their students learning and understanding of physics.OutlineAbstractI Classroom EnvironmentA. the physical environmentB. the learning environmentII Student Motivation1. Student Interest- relate material to content outside of school.2. Student needs-working together at a secondary level build on students need for belonging and acceptance3. Novelty/variety- activites change every 15-20 minutes, hold attention longer4. success- succeeding at somewhat challenging tasks increases motivation for future learning.5. tension-a moderate amount of tension increases learning, a student knowing that they will be asked to deomostrate their learning.6. classroom climate- setting an emotional atmosphere that is moderately positive, with decorations, positive interactions, 7. feedback- comments to show how students are learning, written or orally8. encouragement-positive behavior, effort, and belief in a student. point out both positive as well as negative aspects of a students work.III Lesson Design 1Lesson Intro- students become aware of what it is they are expected to learn, activates prior knowledge, focuses attention, and motivates to learn.2.Clear Expectations-step by step explanations of the lesson, ie agenda3. Coached Practice(modeling)-practice using skills or knowledge , monitored by teacher to provide frequent feedback4.Closure?- allows students to become actively involved in summarizing the key ideas that have been learned5. Solitaty practice-homework or seat work on what they have learned.6. Review-reinforcment of learning on a weekly or monthly
