Course Description SCIT 1407 Applied Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4) 663217 - This is a WECM Course Number. An applied systematic study of the structure and function of the human body designed for students considering a career in the health field. Includes anatomical terminology, cells, tissues, and the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine. Emphasis on homeostasis. This course is cross-listed as SCIT 1307. The student may register for either SCIT 1407 or SCIT 1307, but may receive credit for only one of the two. This course is intended for students seeking to complete an Applied Science Degree. (3 Lec., 3 Lab.) Prerequisite One of the following must be met: (1) Developmental Reading 0093 AND Developmental Writing 0093; (2) English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 AND 0054; or (3) Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Reading and Writing standards AND DCCCD Writing score prerequisite requirement. Disclaimer The instructor reserves the right to modify class dates, presentation, testing and assignment dates if unforeseen circumstances cause such an adjustment. Students will receive verbal notification in class of these changes. Textbooks Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 13th edition, Tortora, G.J., and Derrickson, B., John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 2012, New York, ISBN 13 078-0470-56510-0. Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual – Cat Version, Updated 10th edition, Media Update, 10/e packaged with PhysioEx 9.0 Zao, Stabler, Smith, Lokuta, Griff, Pearson, 2011 San Francisco, ISBN 0-321-78558-3. Attendance and Participation Students are required to attend all classes. It will be impossible to complete this course in a satisfactory manner if you have excessive absences and/or tardies. If a laboratory practical is missed, you will receive a grade of ZERO for the exam. There will be no make-up lab exams.Classroom conduct 1. Cheating on an exam will result in a grade of ZERO on that exam and a failing grade for the semester; 2. Cellular phones and beepers are to be turned off before the class starts; 3. No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom or in the laboratories; 4. No children are allowed in the classroom or in the laboratories; 5. Be on time. It is disruptive to other students when one is late for class. Financial Aid Students If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans, you must begin attendance in all classes. Do not drop or stop attending any class without consulting the Financial Aid. Changes in your enrollment level and failing grades may require that you repay financial aid funds. Failure to contact the instructor will result in your name being submitted to the Financial Aid Office as a "non-attendee". All students receiving financial aid should open an E-mail account through NetMail. See directions in this syllabus for opening an E-mail account. Withdrawal Policy If at anytime you wish to drop the course with a grade of “W” you must initiate that action yourself by going in person to the Admissions, Counseling or Division Office and filling out the necessary form. Instructors cannot and will not drop a student from any class. The last day to withdraw from any class and receive a grade of “W” for the Fall semester is Nov 17 2011. Failure to withdraw by the final withdrawal date will result in the student receiving a performance grade based on the criteria contained in this syllabus. If you drop a class via eConnect, make sure to print a copy of the confirmation and keep a copy for your records.
