CIEG 125 Introduction to Civil Engineering Homework 7. Due: 3:35pm, Monday November 21, 2005. Please use a word processor for preparing your answers. QUESTION 1. You have taken on a job as a research assistant for a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The project focuses on the engineering issues related to natural disasters. a) You have been asked to use DelCat and the library databases to develop a list of publications related to engineering issues related to hurricane Katrina. This task also includes identifying historical information about the construction and maintenance of the levee system. Develop a list of at least ten (10) relevant publications. Organize your list into two or more topics (chosen by you). Each entry in the list should include: · Author(s) · Title · Publication date · Source (Journal title, magazine, report series etc) and location (where applicable) · How to access (for example, location and call numbers for books, url if available etc). Publications in your list should be presented in a consistent manner. Follow the style for references for the American Society Of Civil Engineers (ASCE) journals. This ensures that you have included the relevant information (other than anything that is UD specific.) Based on your list, the professor should know exactly how to find the publication. The guidelines for ASCE journal authors can be accessed at: http://www.pubs.asce.org/authors/index.html#manreq You will need to scroll down to the section on “References”. b) Briefly describe how you went about your search for part a) including the keywords or phrases you used. c) Do a similar search using google (www.google.com). List the 10 most relevant hits you find including as much information as possible to help your professor assess the quality of the information (source, author, date etc). d) Briefly describe how you went about your search for part c) including the keywords or phrases you used.e) Comment on the information in the lists you generated for parts a) and c). You comments should include the reliability, longevity and currency of the information. QUESTION 2. In Chapter 6, of Hold Paramount, Chris is asked by Earl to approach Alex’s Uncle Max who is Provost at Pulson University to put in a good word for Earl. Earl is using his network of contacts to try to land his next job, but Chris feels uncomfortable as he feels he does not know Earl’s work. One strategy is for Chris to mention that his friend Earl is applying for the position but say nothing about his work. This puts Earl on Uncle Max’s “radar screen” but presumably the university will review Earl’s credentials and record. Explain why this is a reasonable ethical choice. Be sure to reference the appropriate parts of the code of ethics.GRADING SHEET – HOMEWORK . CIEG 125 - Introduction to Civil Engineering.
