CIEG 125 Introduction to Civil Engineering Presentation – Ethics/ Presentation Skills Fall 2005 As students and practicing engineers you will face many ethical situations in which each of you will react differently. Ethical decisions are generally not black and white but various shades of gray1. The supplementary text for the course Hold Paramount: The Engineer’s Responsibility to Society by Alistair S. Gunn and P. Aarne Vesilind (Thomson, 2003) is intended to expose you to number of these issues. Presentation skills are also important for engineers. Using Gunn and Vesilind’s approach to ethical issues to provide content each of you will be given an opportunity to make a very brief in class presentation. Based on your groups of four (4) from the first class (see class website, if you can remember your group), you are assigned a topic in the following table. The group will plan a 3-5 minute presentation based on that assignment. In general the presentations will be at the beginning of the class period (some changes will occur to accommodate guest lectures.) The presentation must • Cover the assigned reading • Include each member of your group • Use PowerPoint slides as visual aids. Powerpoint slides must be emailed ([email protected]) by noon on the day of your presentation. You may want to review the PowerPoint presentation “Making Technical Presentations” for some hints. A grading sheet is attached. 1 This phrase is used based James Lammie former CEO of Parsons Brinckerhoff.Assigned Topic Class Date Reading Responsibilities 2 9/19 Chapter 1 G&V Doing the right thing Gr 1 - Presenting the scenario Gr 2 – Ethical issues 3 9/26 Chapter 2 G&V The engineering profession Gr 3 - Presenting the scenario Gr 4 – Ethical issues 4 10/3 Chapter 3 G&V Enhance human welfare Gr 5 - Presenting the scenario Gr 6 – Ethical issues 5 10/10 Chapter 4 G&V Gr 7 - Presenting the scenario Gr 8 – Ethical issues 4-1 to 4-7 Gr 9 – Ethical issues 4-8 to 4-14 6 10/17 Chapter 5 G&V Gr 10 - Presenting the scenario Gr 11 – Ethical issues 5-1 to 5-7 Gr 12 – Ethic issues 5-8 to 5-14 7 10/24 No presentations - midterm Chapter 6 G&V Gr 13 – Scenario and issues 8 10/31 Chapter 7 G&V Gr 14 – Scenario and issues 9 11/7 Chapt 8 G&V Gr 15 – Scenario and issue 10 11/14 Chapt 9 G&V Gr 16 - Presenting the scenario Gr 17 – Ethical issues 11 11/21 Chapt 10 G&V Gr 18 - Presenting the scenario Gr 19 – Ethical issues Chapt 11 G&V Gr 20 – Scenario and issues 12 11/28 Chapt 12 G&V Gr 21 – Scenario and issues Chapt 13 G&V Gr 22 – Scenario and issues Chapt 14 G&V Gr 23 – Scenario and issues Chapt 15 G&V Gr 24 – Scenario and issues 13 12/5 Key points Gr 25 Grading Sheet Points awarded Maximum points Use of time 3 Use of visuals 5 Content 5 Involvement of entire group 2 Overall appearance 5 Organization 5 Total 25 Note: In this case you do not have to turn in a grading
