To that end, we will regularly discuss cases from your work that you present to the class. We will also focus on your search for a permanent position and discuss issues that many new student affairs professionals face once they are employed. Course Schedule January 14, 2004 Course Introduction/Determine Individual Goals for Your Internship and the Course January 21, 2004 Resume Writing/Cover Letters January 28, 2004 Conducting a Job Search/Networking February 4, 2004 Interview Skills/ Mock Interviews February 11, 2004 Tour Internship Sites February 18, 2004 New Professionals Panel February 25, 2004 Deciding on a Position/Compensation Negotiations – Guest Speaker March 3, 2004 Case presentationsMarch 10, 2004 Setting Early Career Goals/Adjusting to a New Position March 17, 2004 Spring Break March 24, 2004 Finding a Mentor/Being a Good Employee/Growing Professionally March 31, 2004 Case presentations April 7, 2004 Ethics and Legal Issues – Guest Speaker April 14, 2004 Working Under a Poor Manager/How to Run a Meeting April 21, 2004 Relationships – Working with Diverse Populations and Working with Challenging People April 28, 2004 Differences in Student Affairs by Institutional Settings/The Institutional Context for Student Affairs/Course Wrap Up Course Grading Case presentations – 25% Session discussion leader – 35% Informational interview write-ups (2) – 15% Class participation – 25% Case Presentation: Each of you will present two cases from your internship for class discussion. (March 3 and 31) Session Discussion Leader: You will each take responsibility for one topic, providing the class with two or more related readings before the class session and leading us in a discussion about the topic. Creativity in presenting your topic is an important component of your grade. Informational Interviews: Interview two people who work in areas where you would like to work. These interviews need to take place at institutions other than Purdue, with at least one at a different institutional type. Write a one page synopsis of what you learned after each interview. Course Policies We expect that you will come to class each week, that you will be thoroughly prepared to discuss assigned readings and cases, and that you will participate in class discussions. Timely submission and presentation of assignments is also expected. All work should be characterized by the highest standards of academic integrity, which includes avoiding plagiarism.
