1 Purdue University College of Education Department of Educational Foundations and Administration EDFA 695A Internship in Higher Education Spring 2005 Steve Wanger Visiting Assistant Professor [email protected] Phone: 496-2354 BRNG 5120 Office hours by appointment Course Description This course is designed to support you as you complete a capstone internship in a career related area. To that end, we will regularly discuss cases from your internship that you present to the class. We will also focus on your search for a permanent position and discuss issues that many new higher education professionals face once they are employed. Course Format, Assignments, Policies, and Evaluation Course Format This course involves discussion, case analysis, occasional lectures, and student leadership of class sessions. As a graduate seminar, the emphasis will be on class discussion of the assigned readings and the session topic(s). The expectation, therefore, is that class discussions will be lively, thought provoking, and reflect the participation of all class members. Assignments Resume': Due February 7 Two Case Presentations: Due February 28 and April 11 Session Discussion Leader: Students select the topic and date of their choice Two Informational Interview Write-Ups: Due March 7 and May 22 Resume': Submit a professional resume' designed for the type of position you are seeking. Use of bond quality paper is recommended. Case Presentations: Each student will present two cases in class sessions on February 28 and April 11. These cases will be drawn from your current internships. Session Discussion Leader: Each student will take responsibility for one topic, providing the class with two or more related readings (a minimum of one week prior to the class session) and leading the class in a discussion about the topic. The key components of the grade for this assignment are: (1) the usefulness and practicality of the information you share, and (2) the creativity with which you present your topic. Informational Interviews: Interview two people who work in areas where you would like to work. These interviews need to take place at institutions other than Purdue, and at institutions of differing Carnegie classifications. Write a one-to-two page synopsis of what you learned after each interview. Include the date of the interview, the contact information for the person you interviewed, and the Carnegie classification of the institution. Policies Students are expected to attend all class sessions prepared to be active participants in the discussion. If for some reason you cannot attend a class session, please contact me in advance. Regular class attendance and the quality of your contributions in class are significant inputs in your final grade. Timely submission and presentation of assignments is expected. Late assignments will be penalized, as will written assignments that do not reflect graduate level writing skills. All work should be characterized by the highest standards of academic integrity.
