Academic DishonestyPhysics 1444-004, Spring 2007, Room 103 SH MW 5:30-6:50Instructor: Andrew Brandt 272-2706, [email protected] Hours: Mon. 4:30 – 5:30, 7:00 – 7:30, Weds. 7:00 – 7:30, by appointment (344 CPB)Textbook: “Physics for Scientists+Engineers” Volume 2 by Giancoli (3rd Ed.)Webpage: http://www-hep.uta.edu/~brandta/teaching/sp2007/teaching.html 1. Grades will be weighted as follows: Homework 20% Quizes 10% Lab 20% Tests (best 2/3 of mid-terms+final) 50% 2. *TEST DATES and MATERIAL TO BE COVERED:The second half of a one-year technical course: the study of physical phenomena including electricity, magnetism, circuit theory, light, and optics.Test 1 (~Chapters 21-26) Mon. Mar. 5 Test 2 (~Chapters 27-30) Weds. Apr. 11 Final (~Chapters 21-34, with focus on new material) Mon. May 7 (5:30-8:00) *Changes in test dates may be made during the semester (but probably not).3. The homework will be assigned using a very convenient computer system. See instructions athttps://hw.utexas.edu/studentInstructions.html . This will require that you set up an account (our class ID is 14445). When homework is assigned you will download the problems. The system is set up to assign the same basic problems, but to change all the numbers used in the problem. This way everyone gets a unique homework assignment. You will take the problems home and work them. Upon solving the problems, you will enter your answers into the computer. It will grade them immediately. If you get a problem wrong, you can rework it to get partial credit. Your lowest two homeworks will not be counted in your grade (there will be about 12 homeworks in all). Note: I have found a strong correlation between the amount of individual effort people put in to homework and how well they do in tests and class.4. Periodically, short pop quizzes will be given to check that you are reading the material. The lowest one will not be counted in your grade.5. Lab grades are sometimes in error, so keep your lab write-ups. You will be responsible for checking that the lab instructor sends in your correct average at the end of the semester. So find out how you can contact him/her when needed. GO TO LAB EVERY WEEK!!6. Important dates: 1/31/07 Census Date 3/12-3/16/07 Spring Break no class 3/30/07 Last Drop Date 7. If you have a disability covered under the American Disabilities Act that requires special test facilities, then contact the Office for Students with Disabilities located in the University Center (lower level).8. Make-up tests will not be given. A missed test will count as your lowest test and be thrown out.A 2nd missed test will result in your failing the class.9. The primary objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism. Student learning outcomes include the ability to solve problems involving the concepts of electricity and magnetism and will be measured with designated problems on the exams.Academic DishonestyIt is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsion from the University.“Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts.”DisabilitiesThe Univ. of Texas at Arlington is on record as being committed to both thespirit and letter of federal equal opportunity legislation; reference Publiclaw 93112-The Rehabilitation Act of 1`973 as amended. With the passage ofnew federal legislation entitled Americans with Disabilities Act - (ADA),pursuant to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, there is renewed focus onproviding this population with the same opportunities enjoyed by allcitizens. As a faculty member, I am required by law to provide "reasonableaccommodation" to students with disabilities, so as not to discriminate onthe basis of that disability. Student responsibility primarily rests withinforming faculty at the beginning of the semester and in providingauthorized documentation through designated administrative channels.Grade replacementIf you are retaking this course in order to replace a previous grade, youmust complete the necessary form by census day. The formsrequired are located at the Bursar's Office in Davis Hall. If you do notcomplete the forms by census day, the University will not honor thereplacement..Library InformationJason Neal is the Physics Librarian.
