Cognitive Psychology Research Proposal AssignmentYou are to write a research proposal of a maximum of 12 double-spaced pages (including title page, abstract, figures, tables, references). Fonts should be set at 12-point, with 1-inch margins. You are also to do an oral powerpoint presentation. The oral presentation will last 5 minutes, followed by a 2-minute question/answer period.Objectives. The idea behind this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to explore a particular topic in Cognitive Psychology in depth, and to identify an issue that more research could help clarify. Writing the proposalwill then help you achieve three important objectives:(1) to expand your knowledge of cognitive psychology by focusing on an area that is of particular interest to you,(2) to further develop your skills as a critical reader of psychological research, and(3) to develop your scientific writing skills.General RequirementsIn this research proposal, you are asked to demonstrate your ability to engage in an in-depth exploration of a particular topic covered in the course. In the proposal, you should critically review the literature on a topic ofyour choice, and then propose an experiment that would help to address a question related to this topic. You may choose any topic we have, or will, cover in class or lab. A quick perusal of the textbook will provide a number of potential topics to choose from. Another great source is Current Directions in Psychological Science, which Falvey Library carries (but beware that not all topics would be suitable for psy4500). The best strategy is to pick something that interests you! You should be careful, however, not to choose a topic that is too broad (e.g., “attention” or “memory”), focusing instead on more manageable topics (e.g., spatial attention, mood congruent memory, mental imagery, etc.). If you define your topic too general there will simply be too much relevant research, making it very difficult to decide which are the most relevant papers.Required sections of the proposal. The proposal must contain the following sections: • Title page• Abstract: One (1) paragraph that briefly describes the area of interest and the researchquestion that will be addressed in the proposal. Put the abstract on a separate page, immediatelyfollowing the title page.• Introduction: This section should provide background with respect to research area you’re interested in, as well as findings from previous studies on the topic. Write in a goal-directed manner. That is, instead of just reviewing every study that’s been done on the topic you’ve chosen, you want to focus primarily on the studies thatare relevant to the question you will address. Moreover, you want to present those studies in a logical sequence that “leads” the motivation/justification for your study. The very last paragraph of the introduction should state, ingeneral terms, what you intend to do in your experiment (i.e., what variables you intend to manipulate), and how your experiment is related to the issue/theory you’ve been discussing. Your introduction should reference at least five research articles (see the section about references). This section should be no more than 5 double-spaced pages).• Method: Here is where you describe in detail the experiment you are proposing to conduct. Again, be sure that this follows naturally from your introduction. This section should be no more than 4 double-spaced pages and should include the following sub-sections:Subjects. Provide information about who the participants will be (ages, how they will be recruited, what compensation, if any, they will receive. Apparatus and stimuli. Here you describe the equipment and stimuli materials that will be used. Procedure and design. In this section you should describe the procedure that will be followed, as well as the design of the experiment (i.e., details about the independent and dependent variables). .• Predicted Results: This section should describe the results you expect from your proposedexperiment. Make sure you explicitly relate your predictions to the question/theory you developed in the introduction. This section should be no more than 2 double-spaced pages. Please note: You should use the future tense. Do not create fake data and write the paper in past tense as if the experiment has already been conducted. Instead, discuss the predicted pattern of results. You should also discuss other ways the data might turn out, and what that would mean. Finally, you should discuss any limitations on the conclusions you can draw from your results (i.e., are there other interpretations that would need to be ruled out?)• References: You must have at least 5 primary sources. Some typical journals for research in Cognitive Psychology are: Current Directions in Psychological Science Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and CognitionPerception and Psychophysics Memory and CognitionVisual CognitionPsychonomic Bulletin and ReviewCognitive PsychologyCognitionAt least some of the references should be from the last two years. You must format your references using the guidelines developed by the American Psychological Association’s Publication Manual (5th edition).APA Format. You should use the guidelines for scientific writing that have been developed by the AmericanPsychological Association (APA). These guidelines can be found in the 5th edition of the APA Publication Manual.Oral Presentation. The last few labs of the semester will be devoted to students’ oral presentations of their papers. Each student will do an oral presentation of his/her paper in front of the class. Each presentation will last 5minutes, followed by a 2 minutes discussion period in which the audience will ask questions. Initial Plan Sheet. You must turn in the Initial Plan Sheet that is posted in the webpage. This will include a brief description of topic/question to be addressed in the proposal. Academic Integrity. As with all assignments at Villanova, you are bound by the Academic Integrity Code. In the case of a paper like this, the most important issue is plagiarism. You are expected to know what constitutes plagiarism and to avoid it at all costs. Note that “intentionality” is not a criterion for plagiarism. That is, whetheryou intended to plagiarize or not, any
