It develops the four skills of language learning:listening, reading, speaking, and writing, with special emphasis on listening and speakingYou will use a textbook, workbook, and CDs and classroom practice to learn these skills.PREREQUISITE: ENG 085COURSE GOALS: the course goals and objectives incorporate specific AssociateDegree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, andfaculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges, universities, and reflect inputfrom the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee student achieve goalsnecessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in manycertification programs. The ADOs and course objectives addressed in this class includethe following: ADO 2 – Effective communication: developing oral and literacy skills in the language.ADO 10 - Diversity: developing an understanding of cultures different from one’s own. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: by the end of the two semester sequence Spanish 131and 132, the student should be able to ask and answer simple questions in Spanish, and tosurvive in a Hispanic society by using common and useful vocabulary, and reading andunderstanding printed materials that use basic construction and common words, know thegeography, history and economy of Hispanic countries, and understand and appreciate thecontemporary behavior and values of Hispanic cultures.TEXT: Panorama, 3rd Edition, Blanco/Garcia, Vista Higher Learning, 2009.WORKBOOK: Panorama-Workbook/Video Manual, 3rd Edition, Blanco/Garcia, VistaHigher Learning, 2009. Final Exam: covers all chaptersGRADING SCALE: 4.0 95-100 2.0 75-793.5 90-94 1.5 70-743.0 85-89 1.0 65-692.5 80-84 0.5 60-64ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: Academic honesty is expected of all students. It isthe ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating, or by helping others to do so.A 2.0 or “C” is a passing grade. Only courses with passing grades count towardgraduation. Other colleges transfer in only courses with passing grades. Many financialaid sources, including most employers, require passing grades. Additionally, earning lessthan a 2.0 in a class results in not being able to participate in the next level of courses in adiscipline, which requires this course as a prerequisite. All students areexpected to be present on test day. If you will be absent, you must speak with me beforetest day. If makeup is completed very late, there will be a minus ten points per writtenassignment or test. Workbook assignments are turned in at the beginning of each class.Tutoring is available at the Student Center in Walker Hall and I am available after class toanswer questions. Study groups with classmates are also very helpful.Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this classare encouraged to contact the office of Learning Support Services at 787-0800, extension8270/8553 as soon as possible to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in atimely fashion.This schedule is tentative. The amount of time needed to complete a chapter may varyaccording to the needs of the class. Outside of class students are expected to completeassignments on time and to use CDs purchased with book.
