JCC e-mail: [email protected] Description: SPN 131, 4 credits, introduces and develops the four skills of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with special emphasis on listening and speaking.Course Materials: Panorama, related activity manual, related CD’s. The instructor will supply other materials.Course Goals: To develop the four language skills, with emphasis on speaking and listening, and to introduce reading and writing skills. Students will be expected to participate orally on a daily basis, and do regular written assignments, both in class and athome.Performance Objectives: By the end of the two-semester sequence Spanish 131 and 132, the student should be able to ask and answer simple questions in Spanish, and to survive in a Hispanic society by using common and useful vocabulary, and reading and understanding printed materials that use basic constructions and common words. We will be learning standard Spanish, which may be different from what some of you know already.In addition to language skills, the student will also become familiar with Hispanic cultures. This course promotes international tolerance, understanding and appreciation, and cultural material is an integral part of this course. Millions throughout the world speak the Spanish language. Their history, the places where they live, music they listen to, the food they eat, in other words, how they live, are vital components to this course, and these areas will not only be discussed but also tested.Grading: Written/oral exams, announced ahead of time, compose 60% of the final grade.Another 40% of the grade is made up of class participation, homework, and quizzes, bothannounced and unannounced. Grading scale: 90-100 = 4.0; 85-89 = 3.5; 80-84 = 3.0; 75-79 = 2.5; 70-74 = 2.0; 65-69 = 1.5; 60-64 = 1.0; 0-59 = 0.0. Attendance: Given the importance of oral participation in language classes, daily attendance is vital if the student’s grade is not to be affected. Unless there are extenuatingcircumstances, more than two absences per semester will result in a lower grade. In addition, the student must not be absent on presentation days or exam days unless he/she has previously informed the instructor and made arrangements to make the presentation or take the exam at a mutually convenient time. The exam then taken may be different from the one given to the class, although it will cover the same material. Any exam or quiz missed becomes a zero.Student responsibilities: To attend daily and to be prepared to speak the target language in each class; students will be graded more on willingness to participate than on correctness of pronunciation; to turn in all written assignments on their due date, and to complete all other assignments to be done in class. Students must take all exams.Participation: As stated earlier, participation is an integral part of this course. A student’sparticipation grade is based on a positive attitude in class, willingness to raise his/her hand and volunteer for different games and activities, speaking in Spanish whenever possible, attendance, and respect for the instructor. If any of these areas are lacking, it will result in a lower participation grade.Academic Honesty Policy: Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethicalbehavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating, or by helping others to do so.Plagiarism is the failure to give the credit for the use of material from outside sources.Cheating means obtaining answers/material from an outside source without authorization.Associate Degree Outcomes: This course meets the following ADO’s:1. Participate orally in basic communicative exchanges.2. Understand Spanish spoken in defined situations.3. Interpret written language dealing with common and useful vocabulary.4. Write sentences using basic grammatical structures and daily vocabulary.5. Know the geography, history, and economy of Hispanic countries.6. The instructor will always tell students when material will be covered or what assignments are due. Homework is called: TAREA.Note 2: Very important or difficult material is in bold print. Plan on a short quiz most class periods and assigned homework each class period. There will be some individual and group oral presentations as well. A test will be scheduled after each Lección.
