Class Times: T TH 1:00 PM to 2:20 PMClassroom: Garner Hall 105Office Days/Hours: Monday 9:00 AM-12:00 AM, 4:00 PM-6:00 PM, and by appointment.Phone: (305) 899-3616Office: Garner Hall 210E-Mail: [email protected] Page: http//euclid.barry.edu/~zuniga Course Description: An introduction to the main concepts and applications of computersfrom a liberal arts approach: how electrical currents, which are manipulated inside acomputer, computer design and construction, and an introduction to computer languages.This is a first course about computers: what they are, what they can do, what they cannotdo, and their history. Ethical issues involving computers. Students will be exposed to theuse of a variety of computer hardware and software.Prerequisites: none. Relationship of course to University mission: One aspect of the university’s mission isquality education and a caring environment. This course helps develop communication andresearch skills via the use of computers and the Internet that will be useful in theirprofessional training. The course satisfies SACS requirement of computer skills.Course objectives: To introduce students to microcomputers and a variety of computersoftware and their applications, including word-processing, spreadsheets, presentationsystems and databases. Learning outcomes/competencies: After completion of the course, students should beable to use computers effectively, and to use different software in the applications. (Word-processing, data management and organization, Internet, e-mail, library searches, etc.)Distribution/General Education Learning Outcome: Students will complete a multiple-choice examination as part of the final examination on which they will demonstrateadequate understanding and performance on 1) Computer skills 2) Computer concepts and3) Computer capabilities.Learning methods: Examples will be discussed in class. Computer-aided presentationswill illustrate some of the topics. Lab hours will provide hands-on experience discussed inclass. Students can also attend Learning center for additional help. In-class assignmentsand homework can be completed during lab hours.Course requirement: Students are required to work on their homework and labassignments individually. No collaboration is permitted among students unless otherwisespecified by the instructor. Students are expected to read and complete all assignments inclass or no later than the following class. Grading: The letter grades will be distributed as follows: A=93- 100% A-=90-92% B+=87 – 89% B=83 – 86% B-=80 – 82% C+=77 – 79% C=70-76% D=60-69% F=below 60% Measures of Evaluations: The final grade will be determined as follows: fourtests (15% each for a total of 60%), class assignments and homework (20%), anda final examination (20%). You are expected to take your tests on the date andtime scheduled. There are no make-up examinations. If an exam is missed, thetest score will be zero. Missing more than one test will result in an “F” in thecourse. Homework is due on the date specified at the beginning of the class. NOlate homework will be accepted. List of Readings, Assignments, Exams, and Dates: See tentative schedule. Textbooks: Computer Concepts Illustrated Series Complete, Microsoft Windows XP,Illustrated Series Microsoft Word 2003, Illustrated Series Microsoft Excel 2003 andIllustrated Series PowerPoint 2003.Course Materials: (3) Floppy disk 3.5” 1.44 MB or (1) memory kit. Attendance Policy: The School of Arts and Sciences adheres to the following attendancepolicy: A total of 6 class hours of absence will result in withdrawal with W, WP, or WF ifwithin the designated withdrawal period, or with an automatic F if not. It is the student’sresponsibility to initiate the withdrawal during the designated withdrawal period. Otherwise,an F will be issued at the end of the term. You are expected to stay in the classroom duringthe whole class period. Leaving before the class is over will be recorded as one absence.Arriving at the class after 10 minutes of the start of the class and/or leaving the classwithout oral permission will be considered as an absence.Academic Dishonesty Policy: Cheating and Plagiarism a) Cheating is defined as the attempt, successful or not, to give or obtain information byillicit means in meeting any academic requirements, including examinations. b) Plagiarism is defined as the use, without proper acknowledgment, of the ideas, phrases,sentences, or larger units of discourse from another writer or speaker. Students are expected to know and abide by the policy as stated in the university catalogueand student handbook. Student Behavior: All Barry University students are expected to behave according toaccepted norms that ensure a climate wherein all can exercise their right to learn. Suchnorms are set forth in the undergraduate catalogue, under School of Arts and Sciences,Guidelines for Student Conduct and Academic Responsibility. Please be sure that youhave read and understood that section. No faculty member will tolerate classroom behaviorthat violates these norms. Such behavior will be grounds for withdrawal from the class,judicial proceedings, or failure of the course. If warranted, students engaging in suchbehavior will be removed from class by security personnel and may be required to undergocounseling. NO active Mobile/cell-phone, Pagers, PDAs, Image capturing devices and/or any electronicdevice having communication capabilities is allowed in regular classes. All these devicesmust be turned off at all times and kept beyond the reach of the students during any TESTin the semester.You are not allowed to browse the internet and/or chat with others using any instantmessage software during the class without the permission of the instructor. If your are founddoing so twice a letter will be sent to your advisor and necessary disciplinary action will
