Engineering Shop Standard Operating Procedures SOP I The purpose of this SOP is to provide standard procedures as to the way the Engineering Shop operates Our goal at the Engineering Shop is to provide quality work as quickly as possible The shop supports all departments of the College of Engineering and other departments around campus To be able to treat every customer with fair treatment the following procedures must be followed II 1 All work requested will come through the shop office do not go straight to shop employees 2 Once a work order is filled out properly it will be filed in priority as to when it was received If emergency problems arise the shop personnel will perform jobs out of priority order A job must be a safety hazard or danger to machine or equipment to be considered as an emergency the shop manager will make the decision 3 For work orders to be complete an account number to be charged must be on the work order before any work will be performed The shop does not accept credit cards Account numbers for ITV billing cash or check can be accepted The standard rate for shop labor is as follows A Shop labor 30 00 per hour B CNC Runtime 50 00 per hour C Use of equipment 10 00 per hour D Forklift use without operator 10 00 per hour E Forklift use with operator 30 00 per hour 4 Everyone coming into the shop to use equipment must fill out a time card and clock in An example of a proper card will be posted at the time clock 5 If professors are ordering new equipment and need electrical support the shop needs to know at least a month out from delivery date so as to be able to provide or make arrangements for electrical or other items needed in the lab where the equipment is to be set up 6 Some material in the shop area is for use by students and staff but they must talk to shop personnel before taking any materials Some materials are identified for certain jobs or projects 7 Requests for electrical electronics support should come through the shop office but they may go straight to the electronic shop 8 All billing will be done by the 5th of each month where possible A copy of the bill will be submitted to the responsible party for review before the transfer of funds 9 All ME 4250 Projects will be assembled in the 4250 Lab Parts and materials should stay with the projects in the lab 10 The shop needs to be informed of the number of students to be attending ME 4250 each semester in advance along with a list of names and type or drawings of projects 11 The shop will give demo on equipment prior to any shop work being performed by students We prefer to do these demos within the first 3 or 4 weeks of semester ME 4250 12 The only demos on equipment given will be for ME 4250 students III Safety All shop employees student workers and visitors will follow all safety procedures These policies are posted and are as follows A All personnel operating lathes mills etc will be trained on the equipment or be able to provide documented training on equipment B All personnel working in the shop will be required to clean work area at the end of the job or day Tear down machines and put all tools away in proper locations NO EXCEPTIONS C The use of safety glasses in shop is mandatory for everyone Visitors will report to the shop office and receive safety glasses prior to entering into the work area signs will be posted Hearing protection is available for use D All welding and cutting processes will be vented to the outside E No horseplay allowed in shop F No individuals will be able to work in the shop after hours unless full time staff is present G All accidents or injuries should be reported to the shop office immediately H ME 4250 Lab must be kept clean and orderly pickup of tools and return to proper location must be done daily I Students are not allowed to wear flip flops or any type of open top shoes in the shop and also should not wear very loose clothing IV Full Time Employees A Work schedule Monday Friday 7 45AM 11 45AM 11 45AM 12 45PM 12 45PM 4 45PM B If employee is sick they must call in by 7 45 and let the shop office know of their intentions A sick day will be used for these days C All shop policies apply to full time workers as well as students D Annual leave will be granted when requested unless the mission project requires priority then other arrangements can be made E Employees attending credit courses during work hours will be approved by supervisor if these courses do not interfere with the normal job duties or could hurt the shop or department F If employee works extra hours and cannot be paid overtime then comp time may be granted by the supervisor All work on overtime must be discussed with the supervisor prior to the work being done G All businesses around the world have a chain of command the shop is no exception All staff problems and concerns should go through their direct supervisor Do not pass by the chain of command Customers should use this same chain of command If customers have a complaint or request it should come through the shop office H All billing is done on the 1st day of every month Billing for work should be in to the shop office by the second day of every month I All shop employees are required to keep their offices and work areas neat and orderly We want a professional shop and professional employees The shop employees must present themselves in that manner The Engineering Shop reserves the right to refuse work if the shop manager feels it would be more to customer s advantage to take the job elsewhere Engineering Shop
