Elayn Martin-Gay, Prentice Hall (2008). A few copies are available for checkout at the textbookcounter if you would like to have a paper copy for reference, but this is not required.Calculator: Any scientific or graphing calculator may be used for all work and tests. The calculator in Windows Accessories will suffice, although a basic (~$10) scientific calculator is more useful. CELL PHONES MAY NOT BE USED AT ALL, EVEN AS CALCULATORS, IN ANY MATH 110 CLASSROOMS OR IN THE MATH TLC TUTOR LAB.Course Description: This course teaches basic algebra skills covering number systems/operations/properties, linear equations/inequalities/systems of equations, an introduction to functions and graphing, exponents, polynomials and factoring, quadratic equations, and rational expressions.IMPORTANT NOTE: This course DOES count as elective credit towards graduation, but Math 110 DOES NOT count towards the 6-credit General Education Analytical Skills requirement.Prerequisites: Adequate high school coursework and Math Placement Level 1, or Math 010.Class Schedule: 5:45p.m.-6:40 p.m., MTWTh, Room 404 Harvey Hall (Math Teaching and Learning Center)BRING YOUR LAPTOP & POWER CORD TO EACH CLASS.Final Exam Schedule: For this section (008) only: Final exam is from 6:00-7:50 p.m. on Thursday, December 18Open Tutor Lab: In addition to your scheduled classes, instructors and teaching assistants will be available to help you any time during open hours in the Math TLC tutor lab in Harvey 403. Open lab hours in Harvey 403: Mondays through Thursdays, 7:45 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Exams and Grading: Grading will be based on 1000 course points divided into four categories as follows: Tests: 51%; Quizzes: 19%; Homework Assignments: 25%; Attendance: 5% ● Quizzes: 1 @ 6 points, 6 @ 20, 1 @ 50, + 17 practice quiz points = 193 points total ● Unit exams: 2 @ 100 + 1 @ 80, + 28 points for practice tests = 308 points total ● Comprehensive final exam: 200 points + 2 points for practice test = 202 pts total ● Homework: 32 @ 6 points, 1 @ 12 pts and 3 @ 16 pts = 252 points total ● Lecture attendance and participation: 45 @ 1 = 45 points total All homework, quiz, and test deadlines and lecture dates are given on the calendar handout.Grades will be assigned according to the following scale:Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ CC-FPoints≥ 920 ≥ 890 ≥ 860 ≥ 830 ≥ 800 ≥ 750 ≥ 700 ≥ 670 < 670% Score ≥ 92 ≥ 89 ≥ 86 ≥ 83 ≥ 80 ≥ 75 ≥ 70 ≥ 67 < 67Credit/No Credit: A minimum grade of C- is required for credit if this course is taken on a CR/NC basis.Incompletes: By University policy, incompletes will only be given in the case of circumstances beyond the student’s control that prevent the student from finishing the class.Withdrawals: The last day of “free drops” (no record on transcript) is Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Drops between September 16 and November 5 will not affect the GPA but will appear as a “WS” on the transcript. By University policy , drops are not allowed after November 5, 2008, except in extenuating circumstances. See http://www.uwstout.edu/regrec/add.html for full policy.Academic Dishonesty: Any student discovered receiving assistance from or giving assistance to another student on an exam or quiz, or cheating in any other way will be given a zero grade for that exam or quiz. A second infraction will result in a failing grade (F) for the class.1(See University policy at http://www.uwstout.edu/stusrv/dean/facstaff/dishonesty.shtml .)MATH 110 (Intermediate Algebra) -- Course PoliciesE-mail: You will receive frequent email updates and announcements from your instructor. These will be sent to your Stout email account only, even if you enter another email address during the software registration.Homework: There will be a graded homework assignment given on each section covered. You will get immediatefeedback on each homework problem, and incorrectly worked problems can be repeated (with a new versionprovided by the computer) until a correct solution is obtained. Tips and examples are available on line for each homework problem, in addition to the help available from your instructor and the teaching assistants in the Math TLC Tutor Lab. (Just drop in during open hours – no appointments are necessary.) Homework assignments must be completed before the start of class the next class day after the section is covered in class. Homework may be done at locations other than the Math TLC, but if so, be sure to leave extra time before the deadline in case a computer glitch prevents your work from being transmitted immediately. To be on the safe side, you may want to make a habit of starting your assigned homework during the time allowed for this during thescheduled class periods and finishing the work during open lab hours in the Math TLC where specially trained staff are available to help with any software questions or math problems.Quizzes and Tests: All quizzes and tests must be taken in your classroom or with a proctor in the Math TLC. Quizzes are given after each set of 3 to 5 sections, and tests after every 1 to 3 chapters covered. Quizzes and tests may be taken before the scheduled test date if the student desires, but the early date must be scheduled with the student’s course instructor beforehand, and the test must still be taken in the Math TLC. Timed practice quizzes/tests will be available for each quiz and test. These will be similar to though longer than the actual tests. You’ll be allowed unlimited tries on practice quizzes and can review the results of each. Your highest score on eachpractice quiz/test will count a small amount towards your course grade.Makeup Rules: No makeup work will be allowed on homework. If a quiz or test is missed due to a serious verifiable circumstance, a makeup may be given. Any student who misses a test and
