Diagnostic Medical Sonography ProgramsDMS-223 Clinical Experience IIWinter 2007Clinical Course Syllabus Course description : Clinical Experience II is the second of three clinical experiences whereby students receive a total of 1350 hours of supervised clinical experience in an approved clinical education center. This course covers advance scanning techniques and pathological change of specific and non-specific nature and trauma as it relates to sonographic imaging and interpretation of the abdomen, pelvis and gravid uterus. Patient interviewingtechniques, professional attitudes and ethics, and other patient/professional situations are experienced under the direct supervision of a registered diagnostic medical sonographer (R.D.M.S.). Completion of clinical competency levels and a minimum of 515 clinical hours are required to complete this course. Please make note that clinical courses do not adhere to JCC's academic calendar.Course focus: Prerequisites of this course are DMS-110 Interpretation I, DMS-105 Sonographic Technique and DMS-122 Clinical Experience I. Student will know and use the names of fellow workers in ultrasound, radiography, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine, including the radiologists2. Student will know and be able to utilize the emergency code system and protocols and procedures to respond appropriately to any emergency situation. Student will know where the Crash Cart is located.3. Student will know the storage locations for linens and supplies utilized within the sonography lab. Students will demonstrate proper methods for disposing of dirty linens and supplies.4. Student will demonstrate a working knowledge of where other relevant departments are located with their clinical education center. ie, central supply, clinical laboratory, radiology, CT, MRI, etc.5. Student will demonstrate departmental policies and procedures, ie phone etiquette, scheduling protocols, exam preparations, image processing, filing system, sterile procedures, patient history acquisition, scan protocols.6. Student will demonstrate and practice appropriate body mechanics for safe execution of sonography exams and ergonomically preventive of musculoskeletalinjuries. Students should become familiar with the SDMS Musculoskeletal Injury Survey. This can be located via SDMS website under “workzone” MSI Survey. http://www.sdms.org/msi/default.asp7. Student will demonstrate a working knowledge of where other relevant departments are located with their clinical education center. ie, central supply, clinical laboratory, radiology, CT, MRI, etc.8. Students will utilize knobology of departmental equipment, students will use test phantoms (if available) to understand individual instrument knobs and controls, and will experiment with technique settings when equipment is not in diagnostic use.9. Student will observe clinical instructor (CI) or staff sonographer’s scanning of patients when other scanning opportunities are not available to the student.10. Student will keep a log of all exams observed, pre/post scanned, scanned with aid or independently of all exams performed by student. Notations to whether observed, pre or post scanned or independently scanned must be made on log sheets.11. Student will assist the staff in as many ways as possible, including if necessary transporting of patients, processing of images, restocking of supplies and linens, and disposal of used linens and or supplies.12. Student will recognize and demonstrate sonographically cross-sectional anatomyof the human abdomen, pelvis and gravid uterus, and small parts.13. Student will practice and demonstrate proper verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills.14. Student will demonstrate accurate interpretations of sonography requisitions.15. Student will practice and demonstrate appropriate patient positioning including AP, PA, Supine, oblique, upright, and lateral positions.16. Student will recognize, practice and demonstrate appropriate scan planes as sagittal, transverse and coronal planes.17. Student will recognize, practice and demonstrate appropriate transducer orientations for sagittal, transverse, and coronal planes.18. Students will demonstrate ability to utilize image documentation instruments as a camera, laser printer and or VCR.19. Students will demonstrate knowledge and be able to utilize alphanumeric keyboards to sonography systems within their clinical education center.20. Students will recognize and demonstrate appropriate sonographic image technique settings as proper penetration, gray scale levels, and display controls.21. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to differentiate cystic, solid, and complex structures.22. Students will demonstrate ability to differentiate acoustic enhancement and acoustic shadow artifacts.23. Student will conduct sonographic exams of the abdomen with limited, if any aid, from the clinical instructor.24. Student will establish and utilize his/her own scanning protocols within or exceeding required departmental protocols for exams of the abdomen, pelvis andgravid uterus.25. Students will demonstrate their ability to recognize pathologies as gallstones, cystic, solid, or complex masses, metastatic disease processes, fatty liver disease, obstruction of the biliary tract, renal disease processes, etc.26.
