MA 154, Fall2003 SAGE, The Online Homework SystemStarting with Lesson 5, and running for the rest of the semester, you will be completingyour homework online, using SAGE, the Math Department's online homework system.The program is easy to use and indicates immediately whether an answer is correct orincorrect. If the answer is incorrect, multiple tries are allowed, at no penalty, until thecorrect answer is found. The problems are similar to those in the text and they line upwith the problems on the assignment sheet one-for-one.Technical stuff:o Web Site: Go to the Math 154 web page at www.math.purdue.edu/MA154 andhit the link to SAGEo ID: Your Purdue Id number (with dashes).o Password: Your password will be given to you in class. Later, it will also serveas your password for finding your exam scores online.o Problems? Go to the MA 154 web page to link to the SAGE Discussion Boardto have questions answered. It is an open forum that will have a live moderatorSunday night, Tuesday night and Thursday night from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM toanswer your questions. He will also answer questions posted during off hours.Getting started:o Go to the web site listed and log in using the above instructions.o Click on the pull down menu for "Choose a lesson", highlight "5", and click on"Go to that lesson".o Problem #1 should appear. If not, repeat the above procedure for "Choose aproblem"o When Problem #1 does appear, work out the problem; type your answer in thebox provided, and click, “Submit answer.”o If the answer is correct, the box disappears and the answer cannot be changed.o If the answer is incorrect, the box remains and you need to calculate and enter adifferent answer. Keep trying, as there is no penalty for multiple attempts.o When the answer is correct, or you have given up, go to the top of the page andscroll to, “Problem #2”. Click, “Go to that problem" You are now off andrunning.o The lesson will always be due at midnight on the day you review the homeworkin class, except for the one due Friday, it will be due Saturday night at midnight.o Lesson 5 is due by midnight Monday, September 8th, Lesson 6 is due by midnightWednesday, September 10th and Lesson 7 is due by midnight Saturday,September 6th by midnight.o You will still be able to access and answer the questions to lessons whosedeadlines have passed, however, you will not receive any additional credit.o Each homework assignment is worth 10 points. Points are distributed evenly foreach question in the assignment.o Notice that the top of each problem tells you the chapter, section and problemnumber from the text.o Note: For Lesson 5, problems 60 and 61 could not be programmed. Pleasecomplete them on paper and bring them to class. Although they will not begraded, they are fair game to appear on Exam 1. This is also true for the last threequestions for Lesson 6.MA 154, Fall2003 SAGE, The Online Homework SystemSystem Stuff:o You can work from a home computer or from a Purdue lab.o Problem sets are individually generated for each student. While your questions will besimilar to other students’ questions, your answers will not be the same.o Your problem set does not change no matter how many times you log in or out. You canprint out your questions, log out, work them, log back in, and test your answers. You willalways have the same problems with the same numbers.o To print out a problem, use the print button on your browser.o The system is set to log you out if your session has been inactive for twenty minutes. Ifyou walk away from the computer or take a long time to work a problem, you may haveto log back in. If you find yourself spending a lot of time working a problem, you maywant to hit, “Submit answer” every few minutes to keep your session active.o Answers are saved by the system when you log out, are timed out, go to a new lessonusing "Go to Lesson" button, or go to a new problem using "Go to Problem" button.o Do not use the, “Back” or “Forward” buttons in your browser. Only use the directionalfeatures in the program.o In multiple part problems, you have to get all the parts correct to receive credit for thatquestion.LOGGING OUT:o There is a Logout button at the bottom of each page. PLEASE make sure to use it whenyou wish to leave the system.Notation help:o A = m∠α, B = m∠β, C = m∠γo The degree symbol is already on the screen; do not try to type it with your answer.o 22 is entered as: sqrt(2)/2 and 6 2is entered as: 6*sqrt(2)o 7π4is entered as:7*Pi/4 and π4is entered as:Pi/4 (The P in Pi has to be capitalized)o x =π6+ 2πn,x =5π6+ 2πn is entered as Pi/6+2*Pi*n, 5*Pi/6+2*Pi*no tan−173      is entered as: arctan(7/3)o 92can be entered as 9/sqrt(2) or 9*sqrt(2)/2o I*2 :as entered is2i (The I has to be capitalized)o Undefined, or No Solution, is entered as undefinedo Infinity and negative infinity are entered as: +inf. and –inf. (the period is necessary)o Always use comma to separate multiple answers.Errors: Here are some possible reasons why your answer is incorrect.o You may simply have the wrong answer.o You may be answering in degrees when the problem is asking for radians, or visa versa.o You may have made a rounding error, or rounded too soon.o Your calculator may be in the wrong mode.o In a multi-part problems, you many have carried forward a rounded solution from onepart of the problem to the next. Use the entire calculator readout to calculate the nextpart.o The problem is asking for the exact answer and you are entering an approximated
