CIS3200: ExerciseDue: Monday, 4/21/2003ABC Inc. Local Area Network:Each of the 15 employees of ABC Inc. uses a stand-alone PC runningWindows 98 or Windows 95 in a regular basis to do his/her job. ABC Inc. isthinking about implementing a local area network (LAN) to use electronicmail, word processing, database, and file sharing. The organization, alsowishes to use print sharing with two existing laser printers and one Inkjetprinter. In order to implement the LAN ABC Inc. should buy the softwareand hardware components listed in the following table.Component QuantityServer (including a monitor and a keyboard) 1Print server 3100 Mbps Network Interface Cards 16100 Mbps Hub or Switch (24 ports). 1Wiring (UTP) -DSL modem + Access Router OR Standard modem + Tel. lineNetwork Operating System (Win 2000 Server, Linux, Unix, etc.) 1Application programs (E-mail, database, word processing etc.) DependAs the consultant hired to plan and supervise the LAN implementation, youhave a $5,500 budget to buy the server (including a monitor and akeyboard), the print servers, the NICs, the Hub/Switch and the NetworkOperating System. For that, you should visit some onlinecomputer/networking catalogs (for example MicroWarehouse athttp://www.warehouse.com, Dell at http://www.dell.com, Milestek athttp://www.milestek.com or Black Box at http://www.blackbox.com ) inorder to select the components. You should take into account an ABC Inc.’sLaw of Purchasing that says "Never buy the bottom of the line of anything". After selecting the components, you should produce a report. Your reportshould list each selected component with an illustration, thedesigner/manufacturer’s name, the product model, the function, somefeatures and technical specifications, the price, and the vendor’s websiteaddress. See next page for an example of component description.
