The official book-store for 18.06 is Quantum Books (corner of Broadway and Ames), and the Coop.Recitations: You must be enrolled in a specific section (instructor and time) because yourhomework and exams will go to that section. Changes are made in the Undergraduate MathOffice (2–108). Your recitation instructor (not your lecturer!) is the person to ask abouthomework and grades.Handouts: This and the syllabus handout are the only handouts being distributed inlecture. Handouts (including problem sets) will only be available on the website for download(and their availability will be announced in lecture).Homework: There will be 10 problem sets, the first one being due on September 15th.Assignments will always be due on Wednesdays, BEFORE 4PM. Late homework will not beaccepted. Please put them in the box for your section in 2–106, next to the UndergraduateMathematics Office. Please staple them (you may use the UMO stapler). They are due everyweek except during exam weeks (see syllabus handout). They will be returned in recitation. The homeworks are essential in learning linear algebra. They are not a test and you areencouraged to talk to other students about difficult problems—after you have thought aboutthem for some time. But you must write your own solutions and you must list your collab-orators on the problem set.Exams: There will be two one-hour exams at class times (see dates on the syllabus handout)and a final exam (during final week) for which the date is not known yet. The use ofcalculators or notes is not permitted during any of the exams.Your grade: Problem sets 25%, two one-hour exams 40% (20% each), final exam 35%. Wewill drop your lowest score on a problem set and will use only your top 9 scores on problemsets. It is hard to predict the exact grade distribution this semester, but as an indication, there were roughly 30% A’s in previous semesters and roughly 75% A’s or B’s.MATLAB: Some homework problems will require you to use MATLAB, which is availableon Athena and other systems. The course web page has more information on MATLAB,including a tutorial. MATLAB is an outstanding piece of software for linear algebra.Videos: Videos of Professor Strang’s lectures from 1999 are available on the web (see thecourse web page) or at the VCR in the Barker Engineering library.RecitationsRec. # Time Room Instructor Office Phone Email @math1 M 2 2-131 A.
