FacilitiesInfrastructure RenewalShared Services CenterClient OrientationCollaborationSustainabilityAccountabilityProfessionalismCapital ProjectsStata CenterBuilding 18 Renovation for the Chemistry DepartmentVassar Street StreetscapeUtility Expansion ProjectsDesign and Construction ServicesContinuation of Project Controls and Information Tracking EfFinance and AccountingA-21 ComplianceConstruction AccountingSAP Plant MaintenanceBudgets and Vacancy ManagementOperationsClean Campus InitiativeUtilitiesFacility ProtectionAdministrationInformation TechnologyPersonnel ChangesFacilities Thepastyearwasfullofexcitement,challenge,andchange fortheDepartmentofFacilities.Webrokegroundonwhatissuretobeaspectacularadditiontoourcampus,thebrainandcognitivesciencesproject;wecompletedastunningcomplex,theStataCenter;andweenduredthedepartureofmanyofourcolleaguesduetobudgetreductions.Withoutquestion,ourdepartmentconsistsofateamcommittedtobeatingtheoddsandtodesigning,building,andmaintainingaworld‐classcampusdespiteadecreaseinresources.Tobetheleaderofthisgroupforoveradecadehasbeenanincrediblehonorforme.It’sbeenachallengepersonallyandprofessionally,butonethatI’vetackledwithoutreserve.Thechallengewasonmanylevels:theday‐to‐daychoresofkeepingtheInstituteoperating;thestruggleofpreservingacampusinneedofrenewal;andtheultimatechallengeofcreatingplaceandspacethatwouldprofoundlyaffectthenatureofthisinstitutioninaboldandperseveringwaynotseenonthiscampusforover50years—andtodoallthisinpursuitofexcellence.Blood,sweat,andtearshavebeennecessarytoachievethatpursuit,butultimatelyIbelieveithasbeenworththeeffort.ItwasanincrediblejourneythatItraveledduringthisrecentbuildingboom.Itraveleditwithgreatcolleaguesandgreatfriends.Forme,IthinkFranklinDelanoRooseveltsaiditbest:“Happinessliesinthejoyofachievementandthethrillofthecreativeeffort.”Thisreport,whichwillbemylast,asIamleavingFacilitiesonJune30,includesmanyoftheachievementsandeffortsofthedepartmentoverthepastyear.Infrastructure Renewal PartofourchargeinFacilitiesistobethestewardofthecampus.DuringFY2004,projectsdedicatedtotherenewalofbuildingsandsystemswerefundedbytheCommitteefortheReviewofSpacePlanning(CRSP)BaseBuildingrequests,Facilities’MajorRepairOperationsprogram,andtheunallocatedbalance.Selectupgrades,estimatedat$2,510,000,tofirealarmandsuppressionsystemsineightresidencehalls andthreeacademicbuildingswereinitiated.OtherprojectsincludethereplacementoftheroofofBuilding4,repairstoconcreteintheAlbanyStreetGarage,paintingofselectwindowsinthemaingroupofbuildings,andrepairstothesteamdistributionsystemintheWestCampus.Shared Services Center TheSharedServicesCenter(SSC)conceptwasdevelopedinFY2004tocombinelikeserviceswithintheExecutiveVicePresident’sOfficeandtodelivertheprofessionalservicesupportrequiredfortheongoingbettermentofthebusinessunits andMIT.JerryAlbertiniwashiredinApril2004toheadupthisgroupandassistintheredesignofseveraltransaction‐basedservicesforthreedepartments:Facilities,theEnvironment,18–45MIT Reports to the President 2003–2004 HealthandSafetyOffice(EHS),andCampusPolice.SeveralkeyserviceshavebeenidentifiedandwillbedeliveredbythenewSharedServicesCenterwhenitbeginsoperationsonJuly1,2005.TheevolutionoftheSSCwilldependonthesuccessandintegrationofthreestart‐upteams:theProcessTeam,theDesignTeam,andtheImplementationTeam.TheProcessTeamiscurrentlyoperational.Itscharteristodefinethecurrenthumanresources,finance/budgeting,andprocurementprocessestodeterminethecostassociatedwiththeirdeliveryandtocompareandcontrastthemtoprovideimprovementrecommendationstotheDesignTeam.TheDepartmentofFacilitiesisplayinganintegralroleinthedevelopmentoftheSSCandlooksforwardtothelaunchofthecenternextfiscalyear.Client Orientation
