The Person and the SituationCurrent LectureChapter One: What is Personality?The Person and the Situation- Each individual acts differently depending on the situation they are in. For example, one might act differently in class versus at a party, or with their friends versus with their parents.- So if there is a “You: in class” and a “You: with your parents”, is there really a You?- While our actions may depend on the situation we are in, there are some fundamental characteristics that do remain consistent across the board. - In class example: “Tank Man” is an unknown protester who stood in front of a long line of military tanks during a period of conflict in China. The circumstances were extreme; there was a lot of violence and the people of China were very upset. However there was something about Tank Man, something about his personality, that made him of all people boldly stand in the face of military force. - Social Psychology asks the question “What type of situations promote a given behavior?”- Personality Psychology on the other hand, which is what we are focusing on in this course, asks the question “What makes one person more likely to behave a certain way than another person?”These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
