HIST 106 Lecture 1 Outline of Current Lecture Missouri Compromise of 1820 Compromise of 1850 Kansas Nebraska Act Dred Scott v Sanford 1857 1860 Presidential Election Current Lecture A Very Abridged Political History of the Civil War Some Key Events Leading Up to the War Missouri Compromise of 1820 o Admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state o Prohibited slavery in rest of Louisiana purchase above line 36 30 N o Compromise state admitted on each side Compromise of 1850 including Fugitive Slave Law o 2 of 5 measures were concessions from S to N make north happy prohibited slave trade not slave holding in D C California admitted as a free state o 3rd was concession from N to S make South happy Fugitive Slave Act provided for return of runaway slaves o 4th Texas gave of land to fed government to be New Mexico territory New Mexico and Utah territory had no rules on slavery popular vote o 5th Texas gets 10 million for land o Majority of Americans liked the compromise as a whole because they believed it solved the problem and prevented conflict Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 Allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska territories to decided slavery rules by popular sovereignty o Resulted in civil war within those territories Bleeding Kansas This made reconciliation virtually impossible Brought about the Republican party against slavery Dred Scott v Sanford 1857 o Lived in free areas while enslaved but was moved back to slave states o Wanted freedom because he lived in free states where slavery was illegal o Court Decision African Americans were not and could not become citizens of the United States never free because he was property so it didn t matter where he lived o Chief Justice Taney AA are so inferior that they have no rights a white man is bound to respect John Brown the Raid on Harper s Ferry o John Brown was a white abolitionist and organized a raid o Was defeated by U S military and then Colonel Robert E Lee o Sped up the arrival of the Civil War 1860 Presidential Election o Lincoln wins o By February in 1861 most of the South had seceded o Civil War began in April at Ft Sumter S C o Civil War was not originally about slavery it was to preserve the Union o Lincoln wanted to save the Union wanted to stop the spread of slavery but not necessarily end it in the entire country o
