Alternative Energy Study GuidePS 336Pollution, rising oil prices, concerns over national energy security, and environmental thought aresome of the reasons of why we are looking towards alternative energy sources. Alternative, or re-newable energy, sources show significant promise in helping to reduce the amount of toxins that are by-products of energy use. Not only do they protect against harmful by-products, but using alternative energy helps to preserve many of the natural resources that we currently use as sources of energy. To understand how alternative energy use can help preserve the delicate eco-logical balance of the planet, and help us conserve the non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels, it is important to know types of alternative energy, the advantages and disadvantages of their use, feasible and desirable options of their development and application, as well as people perceptions of alternative energy.Goal: The major goal of this assignment is to explore the topic of alternative fuels, by gaining better knowledge and understanding through research and a brief survey. DUE: April 9, 2012 in class!Course of Action:Each student will complete an assignment consisting of two major parts. The first part is a theoretical overview offour (4) alternative energy sources, their types, characteristics, pros and cons of their generation, use and disposal (~4-5 pages, meaning about 1 page per source). This overview should be comprehensive but succinct and up to the point. Do not waste time and paper on general, irrelevant sentences and declarative phrases. The second part is 1) a brief explanation of how the survey was conducted (e.g., who were the subjects, where the survey was taken), and 2) a presentation (on paper) of the results of the survey. Each student will write down a brief narrative explanation of the results for each of the 10 ques-tions asked AND include a graphic (e.g., chart) presentation of the results of the survey for each of the 10 questions.Theoretical overview: use available reliable literature sources, including books, academic and professional journal articles, Internet sources, such as university research, governmental web-sites/publications, reports from international organizations, etc, (Wikipedia will NOT work). Survey: while this survey will be a very simplistic version of what researchers and polling com-panies do, it will be useful for students to learn how to collect and analyze public opinion. Each student will have to administer 10 questions, which are provided below, to random ten (10) peo-ple. Students should take this assignment very seriously, as fabricating data or asking these ques-tions to only your friends and relatives will be considered as forfeiting the assignment.Useful
