Persuasive Speech Outline(Question of Policy to gain immediate action)Payal Patel (Fall 2013)Relay for LifeSpecific Purpose: To persuaded my audience to get involved with Relay for Life on the UT Campus.Central Idea: Today, I will discuss the reasons why you should get involved, and the benefits of being involved with Relay for Life at the University of Tennessee. IntroductionI. Good afternoon everyone. I would like to start off by asking everyone to stand up beside his or her desks.A. Now, if you or one of your parents has ever been diagnosed with cancer, please sit down. If a grandparent, brother, or sisterhas ever been diagnosed, please have a seat. If an aunt, uncle, or cousin has ever been diagnosed, take a seat. Finally, if a friend of yours or a family friend has ever been diagnosed with this disease, you too may take a seat. II. The point of this was not to remind you of any sorrows you or your loved ones may have ever felt, but rather to illustrate how cancer has an enormous effect on any given group of people. III. Scientists and researchers have dedicated their careers to finding a cure for this dreadful disease; however, what most people don’t know is that teenagers like us can take part in the fight against cancer as well. IV. My name is Payal Patel, and I am here to talk to you today about why you should participate in Relay for Life right here on UT’s campus. Relay for Life is an overnight event filled with games and activities, which raises money for the American Cancer Society and honors cancer survivors. BodyI. Taking part in Relay for Life is a great opportunity because it raises money for cancer research and treatment, helps young people better understand the effects of cancer, and empowers people to fight againstthis disease. II. Most people think Relay for Life is just like any other fundraiser, but inreality it is a unique event, and according to an article by Mary Huntington in Assessment of the Effects of Cancer on Adolescents, it is also one of the fastest growing fundraisers in America. III. Daniel Bouchard stated in his book Beating the Battle that to this date Relay for Life has raised more than $1.5 billion to aide the AmericanCancer Society. Charles Montgomery goes on to state in his recent article in Healthy Living that this money has gone to buying CAT scan machines to detect cancer cells in patients, develop mouse models with different types of cancer genes to test drugs, and to funding projects figuring out new and more effective ways of treating this disease. Transition: Not only is Relay for Life a great way to help raise money, but it also helps young people better understand the impact of cancer from a different perspective. BodyI. By taking part in this event, teenagers and young adults are able to talk to cancer survivors or cancer patients face-to-face, and meet with them to ask questions about their struggle. It also enables adolescents to hear stories from patients and their loved ones, and get a personal account of what they went through day by day. II. Lastly, Relay for Life empowers people to fight against cancer and helprestore hope in those who have been diagnosed with this disease. Brett Hoffman said in his article How You Can Boost Morale, more than 2,000 teams participated in Relay for Life across the U.S. last year. Teams are made up of 8-15 people, meaning at least 16,000 people helped raise money altogether. III. In the article Breaking the Habit: Fighting Cancer, Katherine Ward declared, “having so many people who don’t even know your name show so much support and love for you is an unexplainably good feeling.” Transition: So now that you know participating in Relay for Life is a great decision because it helps raise money, helps young people better understand the effects of cancer, and empowers people to fight against it, doesn’t it make you want to get involved? Luckily, there are numerous ways to engage in this event.BodyI. First, you can attend the Relay for Life event on UT’s campus in Circle Park in the month of April. I was Relay for Life coordinator two years in a row at my high school for Interact Club, and can assure you that this all-night fundraiser is exciting and extremely beneficial. II. Next, you can help a campaign by joining a team and setting up a booth yourself. Thirdly, you can visit the American Cancer Society’s page at www.cancer.org and donate money through this website, or find out more details on where and how your money will be spent. ConclusionI. In conclusion, I hope this speech has persuaded you to participate in Relay for Life, or at least find out more about this event. Every dollar donated or minute spent volunteering helps fight this disease, and is never taken for granted. Thank you for your time. Are there any questions? Reference CitedHuntington, M.
