Delhi Gang Rape 2012I. The Rapea. A 23 year old female student and her male companion were lured onto a public bus around 9:30 PM IST on December 16, 2012. Theyhad just gotten out of the movie The Life of Pi. They were told that they would be taken to their destination. The bus driver deviated from the route, and the conflict began. When the male victim tried to argue, he was assaulted and held down. The female was gang raped and mutilated.b. I will tell you more details about the situation after I talk about the victims and rapists.II. The Victimsa. Similar to American law, the identities of victims involved in sexual assault and rape are not disclosed to the public unless the victim gives permission, or if victim is deceased, by the family. b. Because of this, the media called her names such as Jagruti (Awareness), Jyoti (Flame), Amanat (Treasure), Nirbhaya (FearlessOne), Damini (Lightning), and Delhi Braveheart.c. The male victim’s identity was also not released for reasons unknown. I assume it is because of his relation to the case.d. Her family has stated they would wish to use her name for future laws and movements fighting violence against women. III. The Assailantsa. Mukesh Singhi. Mukesh Singh was reportedly assaulted by inmates; therefore, he was placed in solitary confinement for his own safety.b. Vinay Sharmac. Akshay Thakurd. Pawan Gupta i. Again, similar to American law, the identities of minors in crimes are never released to the public. He was 17 ½ years old at the time of the crime. IV. Why is this case pivotal in India?a. This case is the first publicized case in India of which I have heard. For years, rapes were blamed on the victims. Rape victims were commonly kicked out of the homes, fired from jobs, and socially shunned. In India, for those reasons, most rapes are not reported.b. This case is pivotal because it will encourage more women to comeforth about violence against them.V. Details of the Rapea. The men each took turns raping her. She was raped with a rod of some sort. The rod was forced into her with such force it pulled her intestines out with it. b. The minor was said to be the most brutal of all the assailants. He raped her twice. He pulled her intestines out and beat her extensively.c. When both victims were beaten to a semiconscious state, they were thrown off the bus.d. A passerby found them at 11 pm who then called police and delivered them to the hospital.VI. Her Time in the Hospitala. Videob. Doctors, family, and other officials stated her to be a strong woman through her two weeks spent in the hospital. She gave her official statement to police when her body was in critical condition.c. The medical reports say she “suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines, and genitals due to the assault. Damage indicated use of a blunt object in rape.” Doctors said she had only 5% of her intestines still remaining in her body. She underwent multiple surgeries; one surgery was to remove the remainder of herintestines to prep her for intestinal transplant.d. She suffered fevers from 102-103 degrees from sepsis due to internal bleeding. e. On December 26th, the decision was made to transport her to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for an intestinal transplant. During the six hour flight, she went into cardiac arrest. She lost her blood pressure and pulse for a total of 3 minutes. She never regained consciousness..f. December 28th she was said to be in critical condition. She suffered “brain damage, pneumonia, and an abdominal infection.”g. She was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of December29th. Beforethis is final, India’s supreme court will review the case.c. There are movements being made the public and government officials to retry him as an adult because the cruelty of his crimes. Also he was only 6 months shy of being 18 at the timeofthe rapeVIII.
