Graduate TA: Sarah Griffin Office location: TBA Office Hours: Friday 11-12 noon** Sarah will be attending classes on Wednesday and Friday and will hold exam review sessions. She will be a great resource for you!MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHYI find human development fascinating, not only as a Developmental Psychologist, but as someone who has been a child with a great big world to discover; as someone who has experienced the angst of adolescence; as a young adult struggling to figure out what I wanted to “be” in life; as a parent to five amazingly unique and wonderful (adult) children and stepchildren; as a daughter of aging parents whose needs are changing and shifting; and as someone whohas reached the half century point in my life and is pondering the future. Thus my goal is to help you understand human development, and to question what we know as well. How is it that we are all so unique and different from oneanother, yet we’re genetically so similar? How do multiple factors and influences in our lives co-mingle to influence us? Does the “science” of human development make sense in respect to our own lives? Lifespan Development is aFALL 2014 _Psyc 304. Life Span Development - page 2complex science, but this is likely the only course that you will ever take that tells the story of “us” – from where we’vecome to how we want to be as we grow older. My goal is to provide you with ample opportunities to learn the subject matter, to learn about yourselves, and to empower you as you develop into the future. LEARNING OBJECTIVESThis course is a survey course of human development from conception to the grave. We will study the basic concepts and principles of physical, cognitive, and social development at every stage of life and will consider theoretical explanations of development. Practical developmental issues will be an important focus. At the end of this class, students will be able to:1. Understand and explain the major theories of developmental psychology.2. Understand and explain the research strategies of developmental psychology.3. Understand, describe and explain development across the lifespan, including:a. Both typical and atypical development;b. The process of biological/neurological, cognitive, and psychosocial development;c. Key issues from conception to late adulthood and death.4. Understand the roles of the ecological model, cultural diversity, and biological/genetic processes in human development.5. Critically evaluate current research findings.6.
