the syllabus from Chapter 18 1 18 8 and Chapter 19 1 POINTERS Acid and Base Equilibria Chapter 18 1 Be able to identify whether an acid or base is weak or strong 2 Understand acids and bases in the context of Arrhenius and Bronsted Lowry definitions 3 Know how to write an equation for the dissociation of a strong acid or base in water 4 Be able to determine the pH of strong acid or a strong base in water 5 Be able to write an equilibrium reaction for a weak acid or weak base in water 6 Be able to calculate of a weak acid given the pH of the solution 7 Be able to calculate the pH of a weak acid solution given of the acid 8 Know how to interconvert pH pOH H O OH as well as and 9 Be able to identify conjugate acid base pairs and know the relative strengths of acid conjugate base pairs 10 Understand why a stronger acid and stronger base react to form a weaker base and weaker acid Here you have to know the relative strength of acids and conjugate bases and be able to use them to either predict the net direction of the reaction or to determine if Kc or 1 Know also how to write a reaction given Kc or 1 and 2 conjugate acid base pairs 11 Know how a polyprotic acid dissociates in two or more steps and why the first step provides the 13 Understand the effects of electronegativity bond polarity and bond strength on acid strength 14 Be able to use periodic table trends to determine the relative molecular strength of acids 15 Given a list of molecules be able to rank those from the strongest to weakest acid significant hydronium ion concentration 12 Given or values be able to rank acid strength 16 Be able to calculate of a weak base given the pH of the solution 17 Given or values be able to rank base strength interconvert pH pOH H O OH as well as and knowledge to convert between and 18 Be able to determine the pH of weak bases or salts in water These calculations may include pH calculations of salts where the cation acts as an acid or the anion acts as a base Know how to 19 Given the chemical formula of a salt be able to break it into ions and determine the effect of each ion on the pH and whether the salt is acidic basic or neutral If the salt contains an acidic cation and a basic anion be able to determine if the salt is going to be acidic or basic For amphiprotic anions be able to determine if an amphiprotic ion yields an acidic or a basic solution Use your
