In this course you will learn how to decide what information sources to trust You ll survey the roles played by you the consumer as well as by journalists strategic communicators and advertisers in their relationships with different audiences Students will weigh the merits of various storytelling methods uses of social media and revenue models while developing a deeper understanding of the ethical issues facing consumers and journalists in today s fast paced media environment Course Goals By the end of this course students will be able to 1 Identify and analyze the role the audience plays in the production and distribution of the news and information 2 Identify and analyze how social media companies or platforms influence the production and distribution of the news information 3 Recognize the need for context in journalistic reporting 4 Compare and contrast ethics and laws in regards to the fields of American journalism and strategic communication 5 Identify and describe the appropriate etiquette and laws when dealing with the media 6 Compare and contrast different media types in regards to sports journalism 7 Identify and analyze the role money plays in what how and why certain stories are reported 8 Discern the legitimacy of news and information sources Core Values and Competencies As a student of the Missouri School of Journalism you are expected to be aware of certain core values and competencies Through your work in this course you will begin to apply the following competencies Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press for the country in which the institution that invites ACEJMC is located as well as receive instruction in and understand the range of systems of freedom of expression around the world including the right to dissent to monitor and criticize power and to assemble and petition for redress of grievances Demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications Demonstrate an understanding of gender race ethnicity sexual orientation and as appropriate other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to mass communications Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of peoples and cultures and of the significance and impact of mass communications in a global society Understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth accuracy fairness and diversity Think critically creatively and independently Write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communications professions audiences and purposes they serve Critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness clarity appropriate style and grammatical correctness Apply tools and technologies appropriate for the communications professions in which they work Required Equipment Materials and Readings Students must all have access to Canvas You will be able to access the course Canvas site at http missouri instructure com There is no textbook required for this course All readings exercises assignments and discussions will be made using Canvas See below for contact information for technical assistance Computer All students are required to have access to a computer or other web enabled device with Internet access There will be a group project which will require at least one student in each group to have access to some sort of photo and video editing software You may use iMovie or Movie Maker or similar programs Free trials of Photoshop are also available At various points in the term I will be using Google Apps including Google Forms You are not required to have a Google account to complete anything created by me During the group project you might choose to use other software programs or apps to communicate with team members such as Google Apps Docs YouTube Meet etc or GroupMe Should you choose to use those products to create or share anything created by you you should use the account associated with your Univesrity of Missouri login or your personal account Optional peripherals A microphone and built in webcam might be necessary to meet with teammates or with me Most newer laptops and tablets have them built in Course Structure This course is taught online using a combination of short video lectures readings commentaries discussion boards and assignments Some of the assignments will require to work in teams to complete online simulations or to write papers The course is built in Canvas using a series of modules You will be able to follow through each module and know what s expected of you based on the verb that appears before the page title For instance if it says watch the main activity on that page is a video lecture with some minimal reading If it says read there is likely a commentary with some required readings provided through links or an information graphic that explains a concept visually If it says do or discuss it is a graded activity that you must complete Due
