Chapter 2 Definitions and Learning Objectives Define the following terms Granulocyte Agranulocyte Phagocyte Phagocytosis Cytokine Chemokine Tissue resident cell eg macrophage Antigen presenting cell Mature lymphocyte Naive lymphocyte Effector lymphocyte Memory lymphocyte Homeostatic proliferation Pluripotent CFU CSF Thymocytes Hassall s corpuscle Thymic epithelial cell Cortical epithelial cell Lymph Draining lymph node Learning Objectives Important concepts to know At the end of this chapter you should be able to 1 For each of the cells of the immune system discussed in lecture you should be able to identify the cell in an image if a histology image is provided or verbally describe what the cell would look like under the microscope including characteristics such as nucleus morphology presence or absence of granules granule color and contents describe the function s of the cell identify the cell as either part of the innate immune system or the adaptive immune system describe any special characteristics fun facts about the cell if provided identify the location of these cells in the human body 2 Describe the lineages of tissue resident macrophages versus the macrophages derived from monocytes Explain which cells are derived from each lineage Describe the primary difference between classical macrophages and alternative macrophages 3 Explain the role and the importance of antigen presenting cells APCs List examples of these cells 4 Compare and contrast the general process of B cell and T cell maturation What is the same between these two cells and what is different 5 Compare and contrast the steps in B cell and T cell activation What is the same between these two cells and what is different 6 Explain how you can distinguish between a lymphocyte and a plasma cell or a lymphocyte and an effector T cell 7 Explain the difference between the primary and secondary lymphatic organs and be able to list examples of each explain the functions of the lymphatic organs and any clinical correlations discussed e g DiGeorge syndrome describe the structural organization of the lymphatic organs describe where B and T cells are produced where they fully mature and where they may become activated 8 Identify the immune system tissues histologically and be able to explain the structural organization of each tissue the function of each tissue the specific location of the lymphocytes B cells and T cells within each tissue any special characteristics of the tissues other cells that may be present in the tissue including their function 9 Explain the process of hematopoiesis including the purpose of hematopoiesis where the process occurs the major classifications of cells HSC progenitor etc the importance of HSCs the cell lineages and their products for example the cells that arise from the common lymphoid progenitors and the common myeloid progenitors the major cytokines and growth factors involved in the process 10 Explain the structural organization of the lymphatic system including its components and function how it travels to the lymph node 11 Explain the process that occurs once an antigen gains entry into the body and 12 Explain why a lymph node may be palpable 13 Explain the difference between a primary follicle and a secondary follicle in the lymph node How can they be visualized How and why are they formed
