PRADNYA GHORPADE LAB REPORT 3 JUNE 4 2023 Goal The aim of this lab was to introduce the 4mW laser that was a part of the take home lab kit The concepts of reflection polarization and diffraction were also taught in this lab Accomplishments I was able to correctly set up the laser diode in lab 3 I was able to utilize the card to observe the beam profile after setting up the laser diode which was horizontally oriented and around 20 inches distant I was able to determine the Brewster angle of the acrylic plate in the take home lab kit after observing the diode I was able to determine the diode s Brewster angle by using a protractor and setting it to normal incidence I was able to use the polarizer to measure the lux value vs after determining the Brewster Angle In addition to determining the Brewster Angle I was also able to determine the angle at which light diffracts when it is incident normally onto a diffraction grating with 1000 lines per millimeter with regards to the gratings normal The distance between m 0 and m 1 mode and m 0 and m 1 mode were measured after the beams were designated and the angle was measured The discussion section of this report contains information on the values Discussion With the aid of the diffraction demonstration we were able to calculate the amount of a beam s diffraction with regards to the diffraction gratings normal The angles of the three diffracted beams were measured as they were viewed on the sheet Between m 0 mode and m 1 m 1 there was a 33 mm gap The formula m d sin 39 which yields the number of lines per millimeter was used It was discovered to be 8 73 10 7 m Results Theta 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 Lux 153 48 146 56 132 66 124 92 105 44 102 75 111 723 124 265 131 965 155 347 Discussion of Error When using the card measurement tool to separate the diffracted modes for example there is a chance that the computations will not be accurate Conclusion In conclusion the lab offered an engaging experience that explored fundamental ideas like reflection polarization and diffraction while introducing the 4mW laser The intriguing nature of the experiment was enhanced by the successful setup of the laser diode and observation of the beam profile With careful observation and measurement it was possible to precisely determine the acrylic plate s Brewster angle It was possible to determine the link between angle and light intensity by using a polarizer to detect lux values at various angles A high resolution diffraction grating was used to explore diffraction which also provided a chance to observe this amazing occurrence up close While noting the possible inaccuracies associated with some of the calculations and measurements the discussion part of the lab report offered thorough computations and measurements while acknowledging the potential errors associated with certain measurement tools
