I Biederman FIRST MIDTERM QUESTION POOL Psych 440 Fall 2012 Intro Cognitive Neuroscience Questions from this pool will constitute 70 of the exam There will be considerable choice available on the exam i e there will be more than 70 points 120 points from these questions of which you only have to answer 70 points worth You will have a liberal two hours to complete the exam 1 8 min point although hopefully you shouldn t need all that time but if you need a bit more that will be OK There will also be some choice in the 30 point section of the exam not sampled from this question pool Only the first 70 points from the pool questions and the first 30 points from the non pool questions will be graded REMEMBER TO BRING LARGER SIZE 8X11 BLUE or better GREEN BOOKS Feel free to draw figures Twenty points each 1 How can memory retrieval based on recollection be distinguished from familiarity based recognition What neural correlates distinguish the two 2 What is Rakic s radial unit model of cerebral cortex development How does it account for the observation that the cortical thickness of different species differs little but that the size total area varies greatly 3 Describe the complementary priming experiments method results and the logic both behavioral and fMRI testing whether objects are represented in terms of their parts 4 What are the differences in receptive fields of cells in IT vs PP Discuss how these differences contribute to the functional difference Shape for recognition vs Shape for motor interaction of the dorsal vs ventral pathways 5 What is the Gabor jet model of face recognition Describe how it accounts for configural effects 6 Why would the recognition of faces compared to objects show a configural effects b greater costs of inversion turning the face upside down c greater costs of contrast reversal d greater ineffability i e an inability to describe faces 7 Where is the brain located a in the foot b in the elbow c in the stomach d in the head 8 Distinguish between neglect of extrapersonal space and object centered neglect by describing how on the same task the pattern of neglect might differ What are the presumed cortical loci for the two kinds of neglect To what extent are stimuli in the neglected field processed 9 How was it determined that FFA was sensitive to both expression and individuation but OFC is sensitive only to individuation Biederman Psych 440 First Midterm Question Pool 9 30 12 Intro to Cognitive Neuroscience Fall 2012 Page 2 10 In monkey STS there is a high density of cells responsive to faces Describe their tuning properties 11 What could account for the greater deficit in prosopagnosia for individuating faces compared to determining their sex or expression 12 What is the evidence that selective attention can reduce biased competition in V4 13 Describe the evidence that the presence of objects influence the way spatial attention is allocated Ten Points Each 14 Describe why the video of the blue tape on the walls or the video of the candles on the floor appeared as a three dimensional cube What NAPs were involved What did the demonstration say about the interpretation of NAPs 15 What is the evidence that prosopagnosia is truly a perceptual deficit for individuation vs determining expression or sex and not just a consequence of the greater number of possible classifications or decreased physical differences for individuation 16 How might the Polyn Kahana Temporal Context Model account for Clive Wearing s deficits relative to HM 17 What is the evidence indicating that the processing of texture and shape call on different neural loci 18 How do neurons in PP avoid the superposition catastrophe 19 Describe 4 characteristics that distinguish the tuning of IT cells relative to the tuning of V1 cells 20 What is the difference between priming and episodic recognition with respect to sensitivity to view variables position size orientation What are the experimental operations that support this difference 21 What are the calculations and logic by which Geon theory predicts that once two or three geons in their specified relations are identified in an image then almost always the basic and subordinate level classification of an object will be known 22 How can the information people employ when classifying faces be estimated through reverse correlation 23 How might false vs true memories be understood in terms of differential coding within the hippocampus 24 What is the transversality regularity What role does it play in object representation What is the neural evidence that the relevant info is being computed in the ventral pathway Biederman Psych 440 First Midterm Question Pool 9 30 12 Intro to Cognitive Neuroscience Fall 2012 Page 3 25 Raising both eyes in the head does not make a face look as grotesque as raising a single eye but it interferes more with identification Why might this be in terms say of the v 2 of the Gabor jet model 26 How was it determined that the Gabor jet model predicts psychophysical sensitivity to metric shape variations 27 Summarize the evidence that LOC is the homolog to IT in the macaque 28 How was it determined that MJH s prosopagnosia is not an associative agnosia but is a perceptual failure to distinguish individual faces 29 Transparent images of a face and a house are superimposed The face moves and the house is stationary If the subject is to attend to the stationary stimulus what will show a greater BOLD response FFA or PPA 30 Describe the methodology that Hopfinger et al p 522 524 used to determine the attentional control system independent of the perceptual processing of the target Five Points each this determined 31 What is meant by neurons being coincidence detectors 32 What is a Gabor filter In what sense is it considered optimum 33 How are the optimal grasping points of an object defined Who is more likely to pick up an object at those points someone with a lesion in the ventral pathway or someone with a lesion in the dorsal pathway 34 By what measure does c elegans have an optimal nervous system How was 35 Describe five ways in which face and object recognition differ 36 Distinguish simple from complex V1 cells 37 What is coarse coding Give an example 38 Why have cortical modules i e grouping neurons supporting common functions in close spatial proximity 39 Draw with labels the Broadbent Flow Chart 40 How was it determined that the Gabor jet model predicts psychophysical sensitivity to metric shape variations 41 What is fMRIa
