Psychology is the scientific study of behavior Since behavior is inherent in everything we think and do psychology has become an incredibly diverse field For example one psychologist may be studying how goal setting improves work performance in a factory while another may be investigating the underlying neural circuitry involved in feeding behavior in mice Given that this is an introductory class I have structured the course content so that it surveys a variety of topic areas in Psychology However due to time limitations I will not be able to discuss any one area in detail Instead the lectures and text should provide you with the basic psychological terms and concepts that would allow you to understand more specific and complex upper level psychology courses you might take in the future This course may be used to satisfy a Kent Core formerly LER requirement in the Social Sciences and may be used to satisfy the University Diversity requirement The Kent Core as a whole is intended to broaden intellectual perspectives foster ethical and humanitarian values and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers Diversity courses provide opportunities for students to learn about such matters as the history culture values and notable achievements of people other than those of their own national origin ethnicity religion sexual orientation age gender physical and mental ability and social class Diversity courses also provide opportunities to examine problems and issues that may arise from differences and opportunities to learn how to deal constructively with them On completion of this course you should be able to 1 Describe psychological theories principles and concepts relevant to the following topics history and methods physiology biology of behavior consciousness perception cognition learning thought language social organizational developmental personality and psychopathology and its treatment 1 2 Articulate knowledge of classic as well as contemporary research in each of the major subfields of psychology 3 Recognize diversity and individual differences and similarities in a variety of contexts Attendance You are responsible for all of the material covered in lecture and the information in the text that is indicated on the course outline see below I do not require your attendance but rather I expect it You do not need to tell me when or why you have missed a class DO NOT ask the instructor for notes from a lecture that you missed Announcements I will frequently have cause to make announcements in class or over email Please pay close attention to your email and read all correspondence that is sent to you from me as it may contain important information about class changes cancellations study hints grades etc Snow Days Occasionally the campus is closed due to inclement weather Please comply with all of the University announcements If this happens on an exam day the exam will be administered on the subsequent class day Registration and deadlines University policy requires all students to be officially registered in each class they are attending Students who are not officially registered for a course by published deadlines should not be attending classes and will not receive credit or a grade for the course Each student must confirm enrollment by checking his her class schedule using Student Tools in Flashline prior to the deadline indicated Registration errors must be corrected prior to the deadline Deadline info found at https www kent edu registrar calendars index cfm Last day to Drop Add a course Thursday March 5th Thursday April 9th Friday May 8th 3 15 5 pm In class Exams BRING A PENCIL AND YOUR BANNER ID TO EACH EXAM Exams will be worth 100 points All exam questions will be multiple choice Do not be fooled into thinking that multiple choice exams are easier or less in depth than short answer or essay exams In fact multiple choice tests can be quite thorough Note that Exam 4 is during final exams week however the exam is not cumulative it only covers the material since the third exam Exam 1 Exam 2 Exam 3 Exam 4 Make up Exam policy In order to take a make up for an exam that you have missed you MUST 1 Have a university approved excuse e g doctor s note court documents etc 2 Contact instructor no later than 2 weeks after the scheduled exam date If you know in advance that you will be missing an exam because of a University sanctioned event e g participating athlete conference contact me so that we can make arrangements for you to take the exam early Otherwise make up exams will be administered at the END OF THE SEMESTER on several pre designated dates and times to be announced Failure to comply with these regulations will result in a zero for a missed exam I would strongly recommend that you do not miss an exam if at all possible I understand that students get sick from time to time but it is in your best interest to get the exam over with instead of putting it off From past experience I have noticed that students do not perform as well on make up exams as they do on in class tests This is not because the make up tests are more difficult but rather it is because the longer a student waits to take an exam the less he she remembers Online Quizzes There will be 15 online quizzes offered during the semester Your best 10 quiz scores will be factored into your grade lowest 5 quizzes will be dropped Highest possible total quiz points 100 Quiz assignments will be administered through your General Psychology homepage on
