EDP 3200 003 Notes for September 16 2014 Final stages of Piaget s Theory o Concrete operations conservation of matter reversibility literal thinking o Formal operations hypothetical and abstract thinking scientific reasoning watched videos from powerpoint Group Work Piaget would prefer individual work while Vygotsky would use group work often Piaget s theory is universal while Vygotsky s is culture specific Piaget believes that learning comes before the connection and Vygotsky believes that connection comes before learning having more knowledgeable peers serve as leaders of groups Reading Vygotsky might use the popcorn reading method and have class discussion Assessments presentations or peer teaching Vygotsky s methods would be more successful with a rubric to help eliminate some of the subjectivity Piaget would have class read alone and possibly complete worksheets on reading Piaget would advocate standardized tests and Vygotsky might allow group tests John Dewey father of constructivism Believes education is participatory psychological sociological starts from birth and starts with the interests of the child Says that school is a process that prepares children to live in society
