2 10 2015 Week 5 States of Consciousness Chapter 4 Part 1 Levels of Awareness Circadian Rhythms Internal clock consciousness awareness when you re paying attention when you re zoned out Consciousness awareness of external events and internal sensations while under a condition of arousal what s going on around you what you re feeling arousal physiologically awake responses awareness more physiological thoughts and paying attention to your thoughts Awareness subjective state of reflecting about yourself your thoughts and your experiences A form of metacognition Metacognition thinking about thinking Arousal physiological state of being engaged with the environment but not necessarily being awake aware ex automatic pilot body is away but not even aware of doing it Levels of Awareness Higher Level Consciousness Controlled Processing in which individuals are actively thinking and alter focused on their tasks and goals must really be paying attention to what you are doing actively thinking about them when we are doing something new we must concentrate ex learning new instrument studying learning to drive stick shift cannot be distracted by other things Lower Level Consciousness Automatic processing and daydreaming which requires little attention span Multitasking ex dribbling basketball while talking to someone driving eating typing ex when you re trying to sleep thoughts are just actively drifting into your mind requires little attention focus Altered States of Consciousness produced by drugs trauma and fatigue perceiving things differently ex drunk seeing 4 fingers instead of 2 after being hit in the head on 30 rock when she took pills to calm down on plane thinks person next to her is Oprah Subconscious Awareness usually occurs when people are asleep dreaming but also sometimes occurs when we are awake we are never aware of the things that are happening to us ex talking in your sleep responding to people in your sleep knowing your dreaming lucid dreaming waking up to alarm and alarm music is in your dream No Awareness usually occurs when we are knocked out or anesthetized but may also occur while we are awake ex shaking someone won t wake up anesthesia surgery no pain while we are awake Freud said that there is unconscious processing even while we re awake even alcohol to pass out anesthetized Circadian Rhythms Circadian Rhythm behaviors that synchronize with the 24 hour cycle of the day we have evolved to feel how many hours there are in a day our brain works with that ex sleep wake cycle body temperature blood pressure blood sugar level How does your body know what time it is can we change our clock can we reset our timers YES daylight savings if we took away phones we would still know timing because of sun Biological Clock brain system that detects the passage of time using internal external cues regulates body systems accordingly eyeballs directly connected to internal clock because we have to sense light day vs dark night body still knows how much time has passes since you last went to sleep Superchiasmatic Nucleus part of the hypothalamus that use input form the eyes to synchronize Q Where is your biological clock A Hypothalamus all body regulations more specifically Superchiasmatic Nucleus SCN its rhythm with the daily cycle of light dark ex have removed it from hamsters they will still sleep but can t sleep in the same pattern because body can t figure out what they need because it s directly connected to our eyeballs it has to check itself uses light Zeitgeber time giver the light that sets our clock to time 0 when we wake up in the morning What happens if you remove the superachiasmatic nucleus A SCN intact in order of sleep night day SCN removed awake asleep awake asleep over over What is the normal sleep pattern A average person 8 hours young adults need more 9 10 hours How about you Sleep Deprivation you could kill yourself if you could actually stay awake long enough you will fall asleep your body will make you Microsleeps milliseconds of sleep because your body will make you try to catch up if you re so sleep deprived you won t focus or pay attention Side effects crankiness irritability sleepiness poor memory poor performance poor moral judgments health costs ex vulnerable to getting sick because your body uses energy from immune system get sick more won t live as long What happens when to your clock when you disrupt you sleep wake cycle ex jet lag Harder to go west because your body thinks its 10PM but its only 7PM easier to try to stay away reset it nightshift work get blackout curtains sleep during the day
