BUS X410 Business Career Planning Assignment 6 Draft of Resume 20 points Instructions and Scoring Matrix Your r sum is an indispensable personal marketing tool It is a sales brochure or advertisement of your skills and accomplishments and their availability A r sum is a public relations piece that is self promotional and totally positive in tone a document that stresses assets and suggests a personality that is interesting and enthusiastic about work is an honest and accurate summary of your qualifications substantive and illustrative vibrantly describing your achievements and skills reflects your individuality and strategic career plan suggesting a person who is selfconfident and moving ahead shows some inventiveness and imagination is well organized and very readable where the information is presented in a logical clear and easy to follow way is immediately attractive and eye pleasing graphically interesting and invites the reviewer to take a closer look at the written work and respond positively R sum s have one purpose to get you an interview It is not meant to get you a job only someone s attention and a chance for an interview There are two main types of resumes functional and chronological The latter is probably the more common type The functional resume The functional resume is sometimes used when a person s job history is a little scattered but it also can be very useful when you have targeted a company and you know they are looking for particular skills This resume may start out in the same way with your contact information and objective But then it focuses on three to six functional skills or areas yes your earlier work comes into play here These may be paragraphs one liners followed by bullet points whatever you feel has the greatest visual impact and appeal And then it may have only a very short section of your job history mostly dates and titles The idea is to give the receiver a better sense of what you can do so they don t have to go searching through what you did in each job The chronological resume The chronological resume is focused on your job history and the accomplishments in these jobs It may incorporate some of the material from your ten top functional areas But here you are trying to summarize what the greatest accomplishments in your jobs or leadership roles have been Any time you can quantify these in a truthful way the better liked supervised six employees or managed a 125 000 budget You may already have the material saved for this but if not then start by making some notes about what you have accomplished in various positions A side note is in order here in your current position I would suggest you keep a file of major accomplishments or major projects completed throughout the course of the year A short note after you complete something will be useful to you in future resume building if not when it is time for your performance review We often tend to forget how much we actually accomplish over the course of a year The boilerplate examples on the web site are based more on this type of model Choose which ever kind of resume you thing best serves your purposes and write a resume applying for the job opening you selected in the previous assignment This should be word document but please do not use any kind of resume templates Templates force you to put information in that may or may not be useful to you These are often full of lines that employers find difficult to read and scan Please please please do not use a template There are numerous helpful suggestions in the text on writing and formatting your resume Read the chapters Look at the examples I have included with the assignment Remember this one is just a draft You will have a chance to make improvements for far more points The scoring matrix for the resume is below Resume Scoring Matrix 20 points Category Format 5 Body 10 Overall Organization and appearance 5 WLS Spring 2014 Marginal Resume missing key parts 0 1 Acceptable Resume is completed but with limited number of parts missing 2 3 Resume is too short Resume is not sections are underparticularly welldeveloped no clear focused key parts need focus to the resume to be filled out more 4 0 3 7 Numerous words spelled incorrectly improper grammar or syntax poor use of space 0 1 Some words spelled incorrectly some grammatical mistakes resume lacks overall organization and or impact 2 3 Outstanding Completed with all parts represented and clearly visible 4 5 Each section designed with some intentional purpose functional abilities or job history is emphasized good supporting information identified 8 10 Proper grammar and words spelled correctly resume is well organized and presented in coherent fashion visual impact is great good use of space 45
