COURSE DESCRIPTION: A 2-hour lecture and 1 hour clinical course utilizing the RAM nursing process to promote adaptation in childbearing families; specifically, Revised 7/2022 Page 1 of 30focuses on adaptive and ineffective human responses in women, including the childbearing years, neonates, and families. Physiological and behavioral deviations associated with ineffective human responsesseen in compensatory and/or compromised health states examined. Use of current research findings in promotion of adaptation for human persons/family adaptive systems included. Clinical learning experiences occur in campus laboratory and in community and/or hospital settings to develop skills in providing care for human persons/families.Prerequisites: NURS 125. Pre-or Corequisite: NURS 241 or NURS 242 orpermission of ASN Program Chair. Pre- or Corequisite for LPN-RN students: NURS 241 or NURS 244 or permission of ASN Program Chair.II. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Function within ethical, legal, and culturally competent clinical standards of nursingcare for women, neonates, and families.2. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills with persons in the family unit.3. Analyze assessment finding to determine how women, neonates, and families adapt tochanges in environmental stimuli.4. Explain use of the nursing process according to the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) toprovide effective nursing care for women, neonates, and families.5. Apply evidence-based nursing research findings pertinent to the delivery of care forwomen, neonates, and families to promote adaptation in the four modes: physiologic,interdependence role function, and self-concept.6. Examine skills necessary to provide effective nursing care for women, neonates, andfamilies experiencing adaptive and or ineffective responses in hospital and/orcommunity settings.7. Demonstrate use of teaching-learning strategies in providing education to the familyunit.8. Compare and contrast the nursing roles and the various roles within the health careteam in the care of women, neonates, and families.9. CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS1. Fulfill Attendance Requirements: (See current LMU CSON ASN Student HandbookOnline). Students are expected to be in class. Attendance will be taken at every course meeting. There are 15 scheduled class sessions. Two (2) points will be awarded for each class he/she attends. To be counted present, the student must be present for theENTIRE class period.@@@@ 2. Cell Phone Use: Cell phone usage is NOT permitted in the classroom. This includes, but is not limited to, talking on the phone, checking messages, and text messaging. If a student uses a cell phone during class they will be asked to leave and counted absent for that day. 3. Study Lab – Study labs will be offered for each NURS course with the method of delivery to be determined by each faculty member. Attendance at these study labs is strongly recommended and expected. This is true especially for those students with course averages less than 83.4. Taping of Lectures: Taping of lectures is a privilege which may be granted by the individual faculty member, but it is up to the student who wishes to tape lectures to ask permission, and not simply assume permission. Students should ask for permission at the beginning of the semester with each individual faculty member. Faculty members reserve the right to discuss with students their desire to tape lecturesand what benefit it will have for students.5. Rules Regarding Tests and Examinations: 1. Violation of ANY of the following policies will result in a zero (0) for that exam.2. All students are expected to take exams as scheduled. Students are required tonotify the faculty by phone or email (see Faculty Contact Information) prior tothe scheduled exam time if they are not going to be present. Students are given faculty contact information in each NURS course syllabi and are expected to have it available at all times.
