DESCRIPTION A discussion of general principles and fundamental concepts of living things that emphasizes connections and applications to society and the human condition science literacy and critical thinking skills COURSE OBJECTIVES Provide understanding of biological concepts to aid you in becoming a knowledgeable member of society importance of scientific findings skills Develop inquiry and critical thinking skills that allow you to assess the validity and Educate you on the human condition to provide you with health related decision making Help you understand how living things interact with each other and their environment and demonstrate how this interaction drives biological change Evaluation of Achievement Grading Scale 92 95 100 A A 89 95 92 94 B 86 95 89 94 B 82 95 86 94 B 79 750 points 1 DETAILS ON SCORING OPPORTUNITIES Exams During the semester there will be four 100 point exams exams 1 4 They will cover topics from the lectures reading materials assignments and quizzes If you miss an exam you must contact me within 48 hours of the missed exam by email Make up exams will be provided for excused absences Excused absence includes an illness or other emergency situations decided on a case by case basis All make up exams are subject to a 5 point deduction for the first makeup Please be advised that an additional 5 points are deducted for every missed exam If you are an athlete at the University of Missouri or participate in university sponsored functions and need to be gone you must discuss it with me 2 weeks before the absence and provide documentation to be exempt from 5 point penalty ASSIGNMENTS will be based on lecture material assigned readings or videos The total points for assignments for the semester are 150 points QUIZZES will be based on lecture material assigned readings or videos The total points for quizzes for the semester are 100 points Please note that the point value for assignments and quizzes is subject to change as a result of unforeseen circumstances e g if a change in our schedule ends up increasing or decreasing assignments available in this semester Your grade in the course will then be based on the number of points obtained out of the number that were available which may not be 750 as stated above ATTENDANCE ABSENCES You are expected to attend all class meetings However if you miss class The lecture slides are available in One Canvas Some of the material covered in the lecture may NOT be found in the text but will appear on the exam Also I may NOT cover all the topics within a chapter Lecture slides are to be used as study guides that focus on topics that you should know for the exam Check One Canvas for missed announcements WITHDRAWALS Should you opt to withdraw from the class it is your responsibility to initiate the procedure according to school policy and to complete the process prior to the deadline 2 ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Academic honesty and professional behavior are fundamental to the activities and principles of the University of Missouri You are a professional student and as such are responsible for your education and actions while attending the University of Missouri As with all classes at the University academic dishonesty cheating will not be tolerated in this course This class has a very strict cheating policy If you cheat on an exam you will receive a zero for that exam You will also be reported to MU Office of Academic Integrity AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT ADA If you need accommodations because of a disability if you have emergency medical information to share with me or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated please inform me immediately so we may make reasonable efforts to accommodate your needs observation direct information from the subject of the behavior indirect information from a third party etc If the Complainant requests confidentiality or that a report not be pursued the Mandated
