Running head: THIS SCIENCE NEWS GIVES JUSTICE TO THE EXPERIMENT 1This Science News Gives Justice to the Experiment:Comparing Main Stream Media to Publications in The Sciences Danielle RoseCentral Carolina Community CollegeTHIS SCIENCE NEWS GIVES JUSTICE TO THE EXPERIMENT 2AbstractIn main stream news it is found to be hard to bring difficult science discussions to the lay public. It was found in a comparison between a scientific discovery paper, and a news article, the news article was written in a manner that allowed anyone to read it. The news article delivered information about a study done informing applicants of certain job positions that there were “lie detectors” in a test given, before they were tested, ultimately finding it would influence their test outcomes. When comparing the two writings, the vocabulary, language as well as the audience it was written for was considered. The scientific article, was difficult to read, and Science Daily summarized the information in a manner that directed the reader to the important findings. Though it may be difficult for scientific news to be readable for the public, Science Daily was successful when delivering information about lying while applying for jobs; the article gave an overview of studies done, as well as the results, in a manner anyone could relate to. This Science News Gives Justice to the Experiment:THIS SCIENCE NEWS GIVES JUSTICE TO THE EXPERIMENT 3In main stream news it is found to be hard to bring difficult scientific discussions to the lay public. When comparing a scientific discovery paper, and a news article, it was found that the news article was written in a manner which allowed anyone to read it; it enabled an audienceto grasp the scientific principles, who may not be scientifically versed. In November of 2010, Science Daily wrote a news article “In the Job Hunt, people do lie, but honesty pays off, study finds”. Science Daily’s article summarized a study which informed job applicants of certain positions, “lie detectors” were in their test, before they were tested, and found it would influence their test outcomes. The summarized science study written in 2010, titled “The Effect of Warning Against Faking on Noncognitive Test Outcomes: A field Study of Bus Operator Applicants” published by Applied HRM Research written by Joni Kuroyama, Chris Wright, Todd Manson, Chris Sablinski. The scientific article was very challenging to comprehend, whereas Science Daily summarized the information in a manner that directed the reader to the important findings, in a laymans fashion. Though it may be difficult for scientific publications to be read, Science Daily was successful when delivering information about lying while applying for jobs; the article gave an overview of studies done, as well as the results, balanced and accurately in a manner anyone could relate to.MethodIn this portion the steps taken to compare the two articles will be discussed. Notes were taken while reading the scientific article, regarding findings, methodology, vocabulary and language. The news article was then read with the study in mind, comparing the information given to the public in both. The audience in which each writing was tailored for was also reviewed. The evaluation of vocabulary, language and audience, was critical to prove that theTHIS SCIENCE NEWS GIVES JUSTICE TO THE EXPERIMENT 4studies findings were offered up in the news article clearly and in verbiage common to the general public.Discussion & FindingsIt was found when comparing the news article from Science Daily, and the scientific study, the news article summarized with words anyone could understand. It was noted that the vocabulary, as well as language used in the scientific article was for a science specific audience. Scientific studies can be very difficult to read, especially to those who are not familiar with vocabulary used in scientific fields. When first reading the scientific study, a vocabulary list was compiled, which had to be defined before being able to grasp details of the study. The news article wrote their summation in an easily understandable manner, enabling the points of the study to be comprehended. For example, in the scientific discovery paper, they referred to the test taken by the applicants as a “non-cognitive test” (Kuroyama, Wright, Manson, Sablinski, 2010) where in the news article they used “pre-employment test” (Science Daily, 2010), this reference is far easier to understand. When discussing the methodology, the news article summarized the information given regarding the actual test that was taken, with references such as “Built in faking scales” (Science Daily, 2010), comparing this to verbiage used in the study “exhibit a response pattern that raises their Attendance and Safety scores regardless of their meritfor high scores” (Kuroyama, 2010); it proves the news articles ability to use concise language that is easily understood. Because the news article used terms and vocabulary that was easy for anyone to read, it allowed the information that came from the study to be easier to grasp and successfully delivered scientific information to the public.THIS SCIENCE NEWS GIVES JUSTICE TO THE EXPERIMENT 5Those who write scientific study articles tailor these articles to their peers within the sciences. Those who may not be aware of scientific terms used, find it difficult to grasp the information that may be valuable. In news articles they tend to tailor the information to the general public, allowing a broader audience to be informed of valuable information that they may not have previously been aware of. Scientists in the study used measuring scales, and surveys that the “normal” person may have never heard of, for example the “BOSS Plus” (Kuroyama, 2010) survey. It would require a bit of research and definition to be able to follow when reading this scientific study. The news article gave information about the study and the results, without losing the audience with scientific lingo along the way. Science Daily did so and successfully divulged scientific findings that could be used by the everyday person.Although certain details regarding the methods were left out from the news article, they fully delivered all pertinent information regarding the study given in the scientific article, in a fair and balanced manner. The scientific article gave extensive detail regarding the background of the study and the
