Eric Hammer 10 3 10 In this experiment an instructor is going to select two oh his students and ask them to try to correctly choose a number he had written previously on an index card Although the two students were chosen randomly the instructor told student A to choose 2 numbers from 1 10 He told student B the same but also told student B that the number was odd Because he said that the number is odd and because the range of numbers is 1 10 we can conclude that there are only 5 possible outcomes Student A is choosing 2 out of 10 numbers so student A has a 20 chance of selecting the correct number Student B is choosing 2 out of 5 numbers so student B has a 40 chance double the chance of student A The independent variable in this experiment is the information given to both students The instructor manipulated the odds that the students choose the right number The students were given different information student B received more useful and advantageous information The dependent variable is the success in choosing the correct number If variable A and variable B are related it is possible that variable A causes variable B variable B causes variable A or a third variable C causes both variable A and B Given this information we know that a correlational study doesn t justify cause and effect
