PSYC 6300-002 A Graduate Seminar Course Syllabus Instructor: Timothy Odegard Office Telephone Number: 2-3315 Email Address: [email protected] Office Number: LS517 Office Hours: Th 11 – 12, by appointment COURSE WEBSITE: webct.uta.edu OIT HELPDESK: 817-272-2208 Time and Place of Class Meetings: Life Science 420, Monday 1:30 – 4:20 PM Description of Course Content: The course will cover current topics in social and cognitive factors pertaining to law enforcement. Student Learning Outcomes: The class will be interactive in nature revolving around class participation. Your knowledge of course material will be evaluated in five different ways: 1) your ability to intelligently discuss the topics covered in the course, 2) your ability to intelligently lead discussion on the topic that you choose for this course, 3) your ability to compose a well written and original F32 predoctoral fellowship application on a topic of your choice, 4) your ability to present a clear and concise summary of your fellowship application, and 5) your ability to provide insightful feedback on another student’s fellowship application. Requirements: Completion of course assignments and class participation. Required Textbooks and Other Course Materials: All course materials will be made available through BlackBoard Student led Discussion (50 points) Each student should select a topic being covered in the course. Each student should select and provide the class with pdf copies of 2 research articles that present research on the topic covered in the chapter. During the first part of the class period, the instructor will lead class discussion on the book chapter or review article. During the second part of the class period, the student will lead class discussion on the selected articles. All students in the class are expected to have read both the book chapter / review artivle and the assigned articles. All students in the class are expected to contribute to the discussion of the content of both the book chapter and the articles. The studentsleading class discussion over the selected articles are NOT being asked to present or teach the contents of the articles to the class. Rather, students are being asked to lead discussion on the contents of the articles. Students leading discussion will be graded on their ability to engage their classmates in discussing the selected articles. As part of leading class discussion the discussion leader might find it useful to provide their fellow classmates with a one page summary of each of the selected articles, but in such instances the summary is the starting point for class discussion of the contents of the article. I read or saw it on the internet (50 points) During the third part of the class, each student will present something that they found in the internet that pertains to the course topic being covered that day. Wikipedia is not an acceptable site to bring for show and tell. Rather, find a recent news story, advocacy group, or YouTube video that pertains to the topic. You can even bring a cartoon that you find if it is related to the topic. You may also present information on a consumer product that you found on the internet that relates to the course topic being covered. Be prepared to discuss your web content when asked. You will be graded on your preparedness to present the content to class. No printed material will be turned in to the instructor. Class Participation (50 points) Please open your mouth and have something to say that relates to the assigned readings. Term Paper (50 points) You will submit a 5 page paper describing the real world implications of one of the topics covered in the course. When preparing the paper please cite research and relate how it relates to the real world. Please provide practical recommendations based on the science. Also, discuss the limitations and possible pitfalls of applying the science to the real world.Grading Policy: A total of 200 points are available for this class. Grades for the course will be assigned according to the following "total points earned" cutoffs: 200 - 180 points - A 279 - 260 points - B 259 – 140 points - C 139 – 120 points - D 119 –0 points - F Attendance Policy: Attendance is expected and mandatory. No exceptions.Drop Policy: The standard university drop policy applies to this course.
